Fall sports championships previews -- National Collegiate Men's Water Polo

Dates and site: Stanford will host the championship December 1-2 at the Avery Aquatic Center.

Field: The championship features a four-team, single-elimination format. One team each from the Collegiate Water Polo Association, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and the Western Water Polo Association automatically qualify. The remaining team is selected at large without geographical restriction.

Selection date: November 25.

2000 champion: UCLA.

Top team contenders: Stanford, UCLA, Southern California, Pepperdine, Massachusetts.

Players to watch: Tony Azevedo and Nick Ellis (Stanford), Predrag Damjanov (Southern California), Brandon Brooks (UCLA).

The championship will be the last for retiring Stanford head coach Dante Dettamanti. Under his tutelage, the Cardinal have claimed seven national titles since 1978.
