Fall sports championships previews -- Men's Soccer

Division I

Dates and sites: Preliminary-round games will be played on campus sites. The first/second-round games will be played November 23-25, third-round games will be completed by December 2 and quarterfinals will be completed by December 9. The semifinals and final will be December 14 and 16 at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State University will host the event.

Field: Forty-eight teams.

Selection date: November 19.

2000 champion: Connecticut.

Top team contenders: Southern Methodist, Virginia, Stanford, St. John's (New York), St. Louis.

Players to watch: Mohamed Fahim (Southern Methodist), Kyle Martino (Virginia), Lars Lyssand (San Jose State), Lee Morrison (Stanford).

Division II

Dates and sites: All tournament games will be played on campus sites. First-round matches will be completed by November 11 and quarterfinals will be completed by November 18. The finals will be November 29 and December 1 or November 30 and December 2.

Field: Sixteen teams, with two teams chosen from each of the eight geographical regions.

Selection date: November 5.

2000 champion: Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Top team contenders: Lewis, Barry, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Southern Connecticut State, Lynn.

Players to watch: John Thompson (Lewis), Marco Velez (Barry), Paul Oyuga (Southern Connecticut State), Joe Cartlidge (Cal State Dominguez Hills).

Division III

Dates and sites: All tournament games will be played on campus sites. First-round games will be played November 7, regionals will be November 9-10 or 10-11 and quarterfinals will be completed by November 18. The semifinals and final will be played November 23-24 or 24-25.

Field: Forty-four teams.

Selection date: November 4.

2000 champion: Messiah.

Top team contenders: Messiah, Williams, Claremont Mudd-Scripps, Kean, Otterbein.

Players to watch: Greg Giordano (Messiah), Alex Blake (Williams), Garrett Jansma (Claremont Mudd-Scripps).

Indiana is attempting to advance to the Men's College Cup for the fifth consecutive year. If the Hoosiers are successful, they will be tied for second in all-time consecutive appearances, two behind Saint Louis' seven.
