Springfield has named Cathie Schweitzer as athletics director.
Schweitzer, who has been acting director of athletics since January 1999, joined the school as associate athletics director and associate professor of health, physical education and recreation in August 1996. Before coming to Springfield, Schweitzer held teaching, coaching and athletics administration positions at Albion, Iowa, Grinnell, Oklahoma and Bowling Green.
In addition to earning a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Akron, Schweitzer also earned a master of education degree in physical education at Bowling Green and a doctor of philosophy with a specialization in athletics administration from Iowa.
Schweitzer is the first female named director of athletics in the 115-year history of the school.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR
Sally Guerette, assistant athletics director and senior woman administrator at Vermont, announced plans to retire, effective August 31. Guerette, who joined the school as head softball coach in 1969 and was chosen as assistant athletics director in 1977, will remain as a consultant to the athletics department.

Amy Turner resigned as assistant commissioner for communications at the Mountain West Conference.
The Atlantic 10 Conference elevated Suzanne DeFruscio to associate director of communications and named Steve Haug as assistant director of communications.
Kerry Van Malderghem was chosen as assistant director of media relations at the Northeast-10 Conference. Malderghem most recently has been an intern with the athletics media relations office at New Hampshire.
The Hockey East Association appointed Noah Smith as director of media relations. Smith, who has been a member of the sports information office at Northeastern for three seasons, replaces Ed Saunders.
The Midwest Conference named Chris Graham as assistant commissioner/sports information director. For the past four years, Graham has been sports information director at Ripon.

REPRIMAND
The NCAA Men's Water Polo Committee has reprimanded co-head coaches Adam Krikorian and Guy Baker, University of California, Los Angeles, and the men's water polo team for inappropriate and unprofessional behavior during the 2000 National Collegiate Men's Water Polo Championship.
The committee has issued a public reprimand of Krikorian, Baker and the UCLA men's water polo team. Additionally, the committee will withhold the coaches' transportation and per diem payment to Krikorian and Baker. Since the NCAA already has reimbursed UCLA, the coaches must repay the NCAA the amount owed.
Former Colgate President Everett Needham Case died July 18. Case was 99.
Bobby Holloway, former head softball coach at Tennessee Tech, died July 28. Holloway, 66, led the program for 11 years and captured recognition as Ohio Valley Conference coach of the year in 1994.
Former Syracuse athletics director Lester Dye died August 11 after suffering a stroke. Dye, 84, served as athletics director at Syracuse from 1973 to 1978 and also was a former football coach at Clarkson. He played defensive halfback and offensive end at Syracuse before graduating in 1942 and competing with the NFL's Washington Redskins from 1944 to 1946.
Vern Wagner, former athletics administrator at San Jose State and Washington, died of leukemia July 27. He was 63. Wagner was athletics director at San Jose State and assistant athletics director for facilities and event management at Washington. Wagner had worked as director of the Kingdome in Seattle since 1994.
Former Pacific (Oregon) President Miller A. F. Ritchie died August 1. Ritchie was 91.
Preston Birdsong, a freshman Tennessee Tech football player, collapsed during practice and died. Birdsong was 18.
Former Texas Christian football player Clyde Eugene Flowers died August 15. Flowers, 78, competed on the team from 1940 to 1944 and led the school to a Southwest Conference championship as a player-coach in 1944.
