REPRIMANDS
The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee has reprimanded Iowa State University head men's basketball coach Larry Eustachy for his behavior at the end of the Midwest Regional Final of the 2000 Division I Men's Basketball Championship.
In addition, the committee recommends to future Division I Men's Basketball Committees that additional sanctions be imposed on Eustachy if he again materially violates an NCAA misconduct provision.
The incident occurred during the final seconds of Iowa State's game against Michigan State University. Eustachy directed profane language toward game officials, then walked onto the playing floor to verbally abuse them further. The officials subsequently ejected Eustachy from the game.
"The committee acknowledges and appreciates the otherwise exemplary behavior displayed by coach Eustachy during the championship," said Craig Thompson, committee chair and commissioner of the Mountain West Conference, "particularly the apologies he offered after the game and in subsequent weeks. But we must address the fact that he did commit a serious act of misconduct; his actions were unacceptable and discredited himself, his university and the championship.
"With the emphasis on this issue that college presidents and the basketball committee have adopted," Thompson continued, "we felt we needed to take this action to remind coaches, administrators and student-athletes of their obligation to make good sporting behavior a high priority."
Stanford's Laura Granville and Alex Kim have been named as Tennis Magazine/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Players of the Year. Granville, a sophomore, captured the singles title in the Division I Women's Tennis Championships and closed the season with a 47-2 record. Kim, a senior, was the Division I men's singles champion and helped his squad capture the team title.
California's Claire Curran and Amy Jensen and Stanford's Geoff Abrams and Alex Kim were chosen as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Doubles Teams of the Year. Curran and Jensen won the NCAA Division I women's doubles championship and Kim and Abrams were ITA all-Americans and Pacific-10 Conference Co-Players of the Year.
Emil Parker, former assistant athletics director for media relations/sports information director at Davidson, died July 11. Parker, 60, came to Davidson in 1968 and served as media coordinator for 10 NCAA Division I basketball first- and second-round games and regionals in addition to working as media coordinator for three Division I Men's Soccer Championships.
Former Syracuse men's basketball player Conrad McRae collapsed and died during the National Basketball Association's Orlando Magic's summer league. McRae, 29, competed with Syracuse from 1989 to 1993.
Roger "Dutch" Ouderkirk, former assistant football coach at St. John's (New York), passed away recently at the age of 75. Ouderkirk came to St. John's in 1978 as offensive backfield coach and later became offensive coordinator. He relinquished assistant coaching duties in 1990 to assume equipment manager duties at the school.
