Knosher retires as athletics director at Knox

Knosher retires as athletics director at Knox

Harlan Knosher announced his retirement as director of athletics at Knox, effective June 9.

After a stint as an assistant basketball coach at Northwestern, Knosher joined Knox in 1960 as assistant football and head baseball and men's basketball coach before becoming athletics director in 1968. Since then, Knox athletics has grown from 10 to 21 varsity sports, and Knosher has overseen six major construction projects. The latest venture, a natatorium, is scheduled to be completed in the next few years and will be named in Knosher's honor.

Knosher also has served as head men's golf coach since 1968 and has led squads to the last six Midwestern Conference titles.

Dan Calandro, a 1977 graduate of Knox, was named as Knosher's successor. Calandro has operated a sports project management and consulting firm for the past year. He formerly was a member of the NCAA national office staff, serving as an enforcement representative from 1986 to 1992 and as director of operations for the Division I Men's Basketball Championship from 1992 to 1998.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Robert A. Scott was appointed as president at Adelphi, effective July 15. Scott has served as president at Ramapo since 1985 ... Hillsdale appointed Larry P. Arnn, director of the Claremont (California) Institute, as president ... Mark U. Edwards Jr. resigned as president at St. Olaf, effective October 1 ... Butler selected Gwen A. Fountain as interim president. Fountain has been dean of academic affairs ... Thomas K. Harden accepted responsibilities as president at Clayton State, effective June 1. Harden has been dean of the college of technology at Eastern Michigan ... Queens (New York) President Allen L. Sessoms resigned, effective August 31.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Presbyterian appointed Valerie M. Sheley as athletics director ... Colorado College chose Reggie Minton as interim athletics director to succeed Martin Scarano, who accepted the position of athletics director at New Hampshire. Minton formerly was head men's basketball coach at Air Force for 16 seasons ... Tom Seitz was appointed as athletics director at Jacksonville State. For the past eight years, Seitz has fulfilled athletics director responsibilities at Jacksonville ... Gerald Griffin announced plans to retire as athletics director and head baseball coach at Francis Marion, effective June 30. Griffin has been athletics director since 1973 and closes his tenure as head baseball coach after 28 seasons ... Tulane's Scott Devine was selected as director of athletics and recreation at St. Mary's (Maryland). Since 1995, Devine has served as senior associate director of athletics for external affairs at Tulane and fulfilled interim athletics director duties during the 1999-00 academic year.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Dennis Helsel, athletics director at Akron, was hired as senior associate athletics director for external operations at Maryland, effective May 8. Helsel has been the athletics director at Akron since September 1998 ... Western Carolina selected Hunter Yuracheck as associate athletics director for external relations ... Francis Marion's Murray Hartzler, head men's and women's soccer coach, accepted additional responsibilities as associate athletics director. Hartzler, who will become interim athletics director after current athletics director Gerald Griffin retires June 30, has been head men's coach since 1994 and head women's coach since 1995 ... Rider appointed Karin Torchia as associate athletics director for external operations.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Wichita State hired Bob Cunningham as assistant athletics director for ticket operations. Cunningham, who succeeds Margie Dersi, has spent the last eight years as box office manager/ticket services coordinator for the National Football League's Kansas City Chiefs ... Oral Roberts named Scott Higgins as assistant athletics director ... Merrimack's Ed McLaughlin resigned as assistant athletics director, effective April 30.

COACHES

Baseball -- South Carolina extended the contract of head coach Ray Tanner.

Men's basketball -- Jim Yarbrough was selected as head coach at Valdosta State to replace James Dominey. Yarbrough has been an assistant at College of Charleston for six years ... American chose Jeff Jones as head coach. Last season, Jones served as associate head coach at Rhode Island ... Mike Schauer was selected as head coach at Eastern ... Memphis selected John Calipari as head coach. Calipari, who replaces Johnny Jones, spent last season as an assistant coach with the National Basketball Association's Philadelphia 76ers and formerly was head men's basketball coach at Massachusetts ... Andy Stoglin, head coach at Jackson State, was signed to a two-year contract ... Winthrop awarded head coach Gregg Marshall a contract extension through 2005 ... Houston hired Ray McCallum as head coach to succeed Clyde Drexler, who resigned March 30. McCallum joins the program from Ball State, where he served as head coach for seven years ... Rico Burkett was elevated to head coach at Wayne State (Nebraska). Burkett, who replaces Greg McDermott, has been an assistant with the program for the past four seasons ... Robert Morris appointed Danny Nee as head coach. Nee, who was released after 14 years as head coach at Nebraska, replaces Jim Boone ... Hartford awarded head coaching duties to Larry Harrison. For the past three years, Harrison has been an assistant at DePaul ... Donny Daniels was chosen as head coach at Cal State Fullerton ... Chicago elevated interim head coach Mike McGrath to head coach. Prior to serving as interim head coach during the 1999-00 season, McGrath was an assistant with the program for seven seasons ... Wyoming extended by two years the contract of head coach Steve McClain through the 2005 season. McClain has led the program to a 37-22 record in two seasons ... Eastern New Mexico appointed Shawn Scanlan as head coach ... Louis Orr was hired as head coach at Siena. Orr, who most recently has been an assistant at Syracuse, replaces Paul Hewitt ... Nolan Richardson III was appointed as head coach at Tennessee State. For the past 10 years, Richardson has been an assistant at Arkansas ... Donnie Marsh was selected as head coach at Florida International ... William and Mary's Charlie Woollum retired as head coach ... Tony Ingle accepted head coaching duties at Kennesaw State. Men's basketball assistants -- Eastern Michigan appointed Dave Pilipovich as an assistant coach ... Scott Duncan was chosen as an assistant coach at Oregon ... Randy Roth was added as an assistant at Robert Morris. Roth has spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Nebraska. The school also announced that John Mahoney will remain as an assistant coach with the program, a position he has held since 1998 ... Nebraska named Kevin Mouton as an assistant coach ... Micah Marsh was appointed as an assistant coach at Arkansas State ... Eastern Michigan chose Glenn Gutierrez as an assistant coach ... North Texas named Jeff Ray as associate coach.

Women's basketball -- Suzanne McBride was appointed as head coach at Tusculum. McBride, who most recently was an assistant at Elon, succeeds Randy Milligan ... Leon Barmore returned to Louisiana Tech as head coach after previously announcing his retirement. In 18 seasons, Barmore has built a 520-77 record and has led the program to the NCAA tournament each of those seasons ... California awarded head coaching duties to Caren Horstmeyer ... Tom Kendall retired as head coach at California (Pennsylvania) ... Angelo State hired Sally Walling Brooks as head coach. Walling Brooks, who succeeds Sarah Edelbrock, has been head women's basketball coach at Incarnate Word for the past nine years and senior woman administrator at the school since 1997 ... Beth Dunkenberger was added as head coach at Western Carolina ... Erskine's Traci Westmoreland resigned as women's basketball and softball coach to accept a front-office position with the Women's National Basketball Association's Sacramento Monarchs ... Keri Hamsher was hired as head coach at Muskingum. For the past two seasons, Hamsher has been an assistant coach at College of Charleston ... Jackie DeVane was awarded head coaching duties at Monmouth, succeeding Susan DeKalb. DeVane has been head women's basketball coach and senior woman administrator at Delaware State since 1995 ... Women's basketball assistants -- Delaware elevated Jeanine Radice to associate head coach after fulfilling assistant coaching duties for five seasons ... Clemson named Barbara Kennedy-Dixon as director of women's basketball operations ... Virginia elevated assistant coach Shawn Campbell to associate head coach.

Men's and women's cross country -- New England named Ron Ouellette as head men's and women's coach. Ouellette, who has been head coach of the Beddeford (Maine) High School outdoor track squad for 23 seasons, replaces Jerry Mullin.

Men's and women's diving -- Indiana/
Purdue-Indianapolis chose Ryan Moehnke as head men's and women's coach.

Field hockey -- Sheila Campbell resigned as head coach at Stonehill. The school awarded head coaching duties to Pam Arpe ... Kristy Hartman accepted head coaching responsibilities at UMBC. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition for the first time since 1987, when the program was discontinued after 10 seasons. Hartman has led the school's club team since 1997 ... Judy George announced plans to retire as head coach at DePauw.

Field hockey assistant -- UMBC hired Meredith Diamond as an assistant coach.

Football -- Darrell Crouch was promoted to head coach at Eureka, succeeding Nick Fletcher. Crouch has been an assistant with the program since 1994 and served as defensive coordinator last season ... Phil Meyer was hired as head coach at Wisconsin-Oshkosh to succeed Ron Cardo. For the past five years, Meyer has been an assistant at Iowa State ... Davidson hired Joe Susan as head coach. Susan has been offensive line coach at Memphis since February ... Wayne McGinn accepted head coaching duties at Adams State. For the past five years, McGinn has served as defensive coordinator and assistant coach at Western State ... Mount Ida hired Ed Sweeney as head coach and intercollegiate coordinator. Sweeney has been head coach at Frostburg State since 1996.

Football assistants -- Central Florida added Robert McFarland as offensive line coach, replacing Paul Lounsberry, who became offensive line coach at South Carolina. McFarland was run coordinator and offensive line coach at Stephen F. Austin ... Georgia appointed Todd Donnan as an assistant football coach and as development field representative with the Georgia Athletic Association development office. Donnan has been a graduate assistant with the football program for the past two years ... Mike Priefer was added as defensive interior line coach at Northern Illinois to succeed Mark Hagen ... Dick Collins resigned as an assistant coach at Merrimack ... Lafayette hired Matt Hachmann as running backs coach. Hachmann spent 1999 as offensive assistant and director of football operations at Maryland. The school also elevated Mark Reardon to special teams coordinator and added Kevin Keating as an offensive assistant and Bryan Cook as a defensive assistant ... Luke Harris was added as offensive coordinator and senior coach in residence at Mount Ida. Harris most recently was offensive line coach at Frostburg State ... Texas A&M chose Buddy Wyatt as defensive line coach ... Men's and women's golf -- Vanderbilt appointed Martha Freitag as head women's coach ... Birmingham Southern appointed Tom Miller as head women's coach ... High Point's head men's golf coach and assistant men's basketball coach Dee Sasser resigned, effective May 31.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Gustavus Adolphus chose Brett Petersen as head men's coach ... Marian appointed Chris Brown as head men's coach. Brown, who has been an assistant at Alaska Anchorage for the past three seasons, also will serve as head men's golf coach.

Men's soccer -- Scott McKenzie was selected as coordinator of men's and women's soccer at Juniata ... Brent Boulware was added as head coach at Presbyterian ... St. Francis (Pennsylvania) selected Fernando Barboto as head coach ... Lev Kirshner was chosen as head coach at San Diego State.

Men's soccer assistants -- Drew Hoffman as named as assistant coach at Army. Hoffman was West Chester's assistant men's coach for two seasons and head women's coach last season ... Ralph Polson was awarded responsibilities as associate men's coach at College of Charleston.

Women's soccer -- Glad Bugariu was named as head coach at Meredith. Bugariu was head women's and assistant men's soccer coach at Louisburg College in North Carolina ... Caldwell added Elizabeth Roper as head coach ... North Central appointed Jason Hunter as head women's soccer coach, men's soccer recruiting coordinator and assistant women's basketball coach. For the past three years, Hunter has fulfilled head women's soccer and head baseball coaching duties at New England College ... Greg Ashton was selected as head coach at Trinity (Texas). Most recently, Ashton served as full-time men's and women's assistant coach at the school and succeeds Paul McGinlay, who will continue as head men's soccer coach ... Queens (North Carolina) promoted Johnathan Brabson to head coach. Brabson takes over for J.D. Kyzer after serving as an assistant with the program for the last two seasons ... Erin Fitzgerald was awarded head coaching duties at St. Peter's.

Women's soccer assistants -- Army hired Jim Jorgensen as a full-time assistant. Jorgensen has been a part-time assistant coach with the program for the past two years ... Janet Rayfield resigned as an assistant coach at Illinois to become a national staff coach for U.S. Soccer. Rayfield, who has been with the Illinois program since last summer, will continue as a volunteer assistant coach.

Softball -- Anderson (South Carolina) named Dana Jenkins as co-head coach ... Tyra Perry was selected as head coach at Birmingham Southern.

Men's and women's track and field -- Boise State appointed assistant track coach Amy Christoffersen as interim head coach to replace Mike Johnson, who resigned.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Nelson Wittenmyer was appointed as head women's coach at Case Western Reserve ... Towson hired Christopher Riley as head women's coach to replace Catherine Lavery. Riley has been an assistant at St. John's (New York) for five years.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Jennifer LaGrange and Xiangrong Liu were added as assistants at Maryland. LaGrange has served as an assistant at Southwest Texas State since 1997 and Liu has been a graduate assistant and assistant coach at Dayton for six years ... Angelo State added Marci Sanders as a women's assistant coach. Sanders replaces Margot Royer, who resigned ... Dawn Burke resigned as assistant women's coach at Merrimack ... Clemson added Joey Vrazel and Kelly Sheffield as assistants.

Wrestling -- Tim Neumann resigned after 15 seasons as head coach at Nebraska. Neumann closes his tenure with a 199-76-6 record ... Mark Cody, assistant coach at Nebraska, was appointed as interim head coach ... Scott Amundsen, head coach at Anderson, resigned to become athletics academic counselor at North Carolina-Greensboro.

STAFF

Athletic trainer -- Dwayne Beam was named as head athletic trainer at Longwood. Beam has served as head athletic trainer at Belmont Abbey since 1997.

Development -- North Carolina State named Tonya Washington as director of student-athlete development.

Marketing and promotions -- John Fitzgerald was hired as director of marketing and promotions at Loyola (Illinois). Fitzgerald has fulfilled graduate assistant responsibilities in the school's sports information office for the past two years.

Media relations -- Lehigh chose Jim Marshall as sports media relations director.

Sports information -- DePaul elevated Scott Reed to sports information director. Reed, who succeeds John Lanctot, has been associate sports information director.

Sports information assistant -- Pat Madden was added as assistant sports information director at Missouri-Kansas City. Madden has spent the past three years as the sports information director at Missouri Western State.

Sports medicine -- Syracuse chose Tim Neal as coordinator of sports medicine.

Athletics ticket services -- Rich Haas was hired as athletics ticket manager at Lehigh.

CONFERENCES

The Mid-Continent Conference named Patty Broderick as coordinator of women's basketball officials. Broderick has been coordinator of women's basketball officials for the Big Ten Conference since 1987 and has been an official for the Women's National Basketball Association for three seasons.

Karin Torchia resigned as assistant commissioner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and Brian Bolten resigned as general manager of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Properties.

ASSOCIATIONS

John Shaffer resigned as media relations manager with the Orange Bowl Committee to become sports information director at Loyola Marymount. Allison Plummer, marketing director, was appointed as interim media relations manager.

AGREEMENTS

The Western Athletic Conference signed agreements with the Mobile Alabama Bowl, Silicon Valley Football Classic and Humanitarian Bowl. The Silicon Valley Football Classic will debut December 31 in San Jose. The Mobile Alabama Bowl is scheduled for December 20 and the Humanitarian Bowl will be played December 28.

MISCELLANEOUS

John Swofford accepted responsibilities as coordinator of the Bowl Championship Series for 2000. Swofford, who is commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference, succeeds Southeastern Conference commissioner Roy Kramer.

NOTABLES

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Brenda Reilly as the 2000 Jostens-Berenson Service Award winner. The honor recognizes Reilly, who currently is associate athletics director at Central Connecticut State, for her commitment of service to women's basketball. Reilly formerly coached women's basketball, volleyball and softball at Central Connecticut State from 1971 to 1996.

Senior forward Jayne Even of North Dakota State was named as the Rawlings/
WBCA Division II player of the year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Even was chosen as the North Central Conference player of the year and finished the season first in scoring with 22.6 points per game, second in rebounding with 9.5 per game and third in steals with 2.33 per game.

Tamika Catchings, a junior forward at Tennessee, was selected as the Women's Basketball Association's Rawlings/WBCA Division I Player of the Year. Catchings was recognized as the most outstanding player at the 2000 NCAA Women's Mideast Regional and helped lead Tennessee to an appearance in this year's national championship game.

DEATHS

Nicholls State football player Adam Padgett died April 17. He was 20. Padgett, who was scheduled to be a returning starter, was on a cruise when he began having trouble breathing and was unable to be revived.

Dick Kishpaugh, former publicist and statistician for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, was killed in a recent automobile accident. Kishpaugh, 74, worked with the MIAA from the 1940s into the mid-1970s and also was responsible for recording history and statistics for the Michigan High School Athletic Association for more than 50 years.

Gene Elstun, 64, of Overland Park, Kansas, died March 30. Elstun was co-captain of the 1957 University of Kansas men's basketball team. That team, which included all-American Wilt Chamberlain, lost to undefeated North Carolina in triple overtime, 54-53, in the championship game. Elstun's son, Doug, was a member of the 1991 Kansas basketball team that lost to Duke, 72-65, also in the NCAA championship game. The Elstuns are believed to be the only father-son combination to represent the same school in the NCAA Final Four. Gene Elstun's wife, Nancy Jo Kestel Elstun, was a longtime employee of the NCAA.
