Texas-San Antonio selects basketball coach

Rae Rippetoe-Blair accepted head coaching responsibilities at Texas-San Antonio. Rippetoe-Blair succeeds interim head coach Jeff Dow.

For the past eight seasons, Rippetoe-Blair has served as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State. Before her tenure there, she fulfilled duties as an assistant coach at Southern Nazarene University from 1985 to 1987 before becoming head coach at Phillips University in 1987. In five seasons at Phillips, Rippetoe-Blair led squads to an NAIA playoff appearance in each season and built a 104-51 record, making her the school's winningest head coach.

A four-year starter for the Oklahoma State women's basketball team, Rippetoe-Blair ranks among the career leaders in several categories, including sixth in career steals with 171.

She graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Oklahoma State in 1985 and earned a master of science degree in education administration from Phillips in 1988.

Grafton Young resigned as athletics director at Newberry, but will retain head men's basketball coaching responsibilities. The school selected Phil Spotts as interim athletics director ... North Carolina Central chose Lin Dawson as athletics director ... Harry C. Sheehy III was elevated to chair and director of physical education, athletics and recreation, effective July 1. Sheehy, currently head men's basketball coach, succeeds Robert R. Peck, who will be on leave for the next academic year before retiring in June 2001 ... Sam Goodwin was hired as director of athletics at Henderson State. For the past 17 years, Goodwin has been head football coach at Northwestern State ... Delaware State hired Hallie E. Gregory as director of athletics, effective July 1, 2000, to succeed William Collick. For the past 11 years, Gregory has been director of athletics and chairman of the department of physical education at Maryland-Eastern Shore.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Belmont elevated Steve Barrick to associate director of athletics ... Patricia Hannisch announced plans to retire as associate director of athletics at Kean, effective August 1. Hannisch, who has served the school for 25 years, also was head women's basketball coach at the school from 1974 to 1986.

Dave Cagianello resigned as assistant athletics director-athletics communications at Iona ... Simmons' Maureen McCormack resigned after six years as assistant athletics director and head women's basketball coach. The school announced that Anthony Price, formerly an assistant at Massachusetts-Boston, will replace McCormack as assistant athletics director and head coach ... Kim Godek was hired as assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, succeeding Mindy de Groot. For the past two years, Godek has been assistant general manager for the Michigan Battle Cats, the Class A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Houston Astros ... Boston College named Barry Gallup as assistant athletics director for football operations ... Marquette appointed Rich McGill as assistant athletics director for marketing, effective June 5. McGill has been with the athletics marketing department at Maryland since 1996, including the last two as director of marketing ... Steve Gearhart accepted the position of assistant athletics director for development at Idaho.

COACHES

Baseball -- West Alabama's Mark Smartt resigned as head coach, effective May 31 ... North Carolina-Pembroke's Danny Davis resigned as head coach.

Baseball assistants -- Rhode Island added Jim Mason as pitching coach and baseball recruiting coordinator and added Jay Krystofolski as outfielders and bench coach.

Men's basketball -- Utah State head coach Stew Morrill was awarded a contract extension through 2008. In two seasons as head coach, Morrill has compiled a 43-19 record ... Greg Giddings was promoted to head coach at Midwestern State. Giddings, who replaces Jeff Ray, has been an assistant with the program for four years ... Sidney Moncrief resigned after one season as head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock to become an assistant with the National Basketball Association's Dallas Mavericks ... Loras hired Chad Walthall as head coach to replace John Lembezeder, who resigned. For the past two seasons, Walthall has served as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan ... Salisbury State selected Steve Holmes as head coach. For the last six years, Holmes has guided the program at Geneseo State and replaces Ward Lambert ... Winston Bennett was appointed as head coach at Kentucky State. Bennett most recently has been serving as a scout for the National Basketball Association's Boston Celtics ... Jim Platt was selected as head coach at Charleston Southern ... Jacksonville State appointed Mike LaPlante as head coach ... Frankie Allen was appointed as head coach at Howard. Men's basketball assistants -- Manhattan elevated Mike Bramucci to second assistant coach. Bramucci, who was a third assistant with the squad last season, succeeds Chucky Martin. The school also announced the selection of Kendrick Moore as third assistant coach and the promotion of Tony Harmon, head manager, to administrative assistant ... Jamal Meeks and John Groce were added as assistants at Butler. Meeks has been an assistant at Bowling Green for three seasons and Groce has been an assistant at North Carolina State for four seasons ... Alabama named Johnny Jones as an assistant coach ... Wake Forest assistant coach Russell Turner resigned ... Steve Pinone was named as associate head coach and Chris Walker was named assistant coach at Villanova ... Lewis spent 1997-98 as head coach of the Washington Mystics of the Women's National Basketball Association ... Jody Prete accepted duties as head women's basketball coach and softball coach at Rose-Hulman ... Dana Eikenberg accepted responsibilities as head coach at Missouri-Kansas City. Eikenberg most recently was an assistant at Iowa for the past three seasons ... Valdosta State chose Kiley Hill as head coach. Last season, Hill served as head coach at West Alabama ... Men's and women's cross country -- John Coughlan, head men's and women's cross county and track and field coach at Illinois State, announced his retirement ... Tusculum appointed Jim Fields as men's and women's cross country coach to replace Randy Milligan. Fields, a former athletics director at the school, served as an assistant with the programs last season ... Paul Dutton was added as head men's coach at New Hampshire College. Dutton, who succeeds Ed Daniels, also teaches and is an assistant cross country and track coach at Londonderry (New Hampshire) High School.

Field hockey -- Dartmouth head coach Julie Dayton resigned, effective June 30 ... Heather Mackay, head field hockey and assistant women's lacrosse coach at Oneonta State for the past three years, was chosen as head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at New Paltz State.

Football -- Rubin Stevenson was appointed as head coach at Frostburg State to replace Ed Sweeney. Stevenson has been defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator with the school since 1992, assistant head coach since 1997 and director of compliance since 1994 ... Art Bell was named as head coach at Salve Regina. For the past six seasons, Bell has fulfilled duties as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach with the school ... Mississippi College head coach Terry McMillan resigned ... Christopher Newport named Matt Kelchner as head coach ... Mark F. Luther was chosen as head coach at Lock Haven ... Tommy Bowden, head coach at Clemson, accepted a one-year contract extension through 2004.

Football assistants -- Southwest Texas appointed Blake Miller as offensive line coach and Stewart Krisch as quarterbacks coach ... Defiance added Ralph Isernia as offensive line/offensive coordinator and assistant baseball coach to succeed Chris Ochs. Isernia has spent the last six years as an assistant football coach, recruiting coordinator and physical education instructor at Methodist ... Stephen F. Austin added Kevin Goodwin as running backs coach and moved Robert Walker to run game coordinator and offensive line coach ... St. Cloud State hired Paul Rudolph as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Rudolph has been head coach at Upper Iowa since 1991 and athletics director at the school since 1996 ... Tim Drevno resigned as offensive line coach at San Jose State to accept duties as an assistant coach at Idaho ... Bucknell added John Jones as wide receivers coach and promoted assistant coach Marty Schaetzle to offensive coordinator.

Men's and women's golf -- Martha Nause was chosen as head men's coach at Macalester. Nause, a member of the LPGA Tour for 22 years, succeeds Doug Bolstorff.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Norm Bazin was hired as an assistant at Colorado College. Bazin most recently spent four years as an assistant at Massachusetts-Lowell. The school also appointed Terry Kleisinger as a volunteer assistant.

Men's soccer -- Doug Elder was hired as head coach at Midwestern State. Elder, who succeeds Nathan Pifer, has coached boys' soccer at Clear Lake (Texas) High School ... California appointed Kevin Grimes as head coach ... Scott Zachmann was selected as head men's and women's coach at Concordia-St. Paul ... Oneonta State men's assistant Eric Miller was awarded head men's coaching duties at Southern Maine. Miller has been an assistant with the program for 10 years ... Doug Moore was named as head coach at Bloomfield.

Women's soccer -- Belmont added Sterling Nabours as head coach to replace Patricia Hughes. Nabours has been head women's soccer coach at Bellevue for two seasons ... Nebraska Wesleyan selected Brett Rosenberger as head coach.

Softball -- Saint Joseph's (Indiana) hired Frank Wilkins as head coach to succeed Mark Settle, who became assistant athletics director for facilities at Cornerstone University, and interim coach Jim Langen ... Diane Hobin resigned as head coach at Stony Brook, effective August 1 ... Hunter's Arthur Smith resigned as head coach. He was in his fifth season leading the program. Jackee Meadow, assistant softball coach and head women's basketball coach, was chosen as interim coach ... Fairleigh Dickinson chose Bob Bruno as head coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Duane Klueh was named as an assistant coach at Indiana State ... Mark Srouji accepted head women's coaching duties at Belmont. Srouji most recently served as interim head coach during the 2000 season ... Eastern Kentucky head men's and women's coach Tom Higgins stepped down. Higgins has guided the men's squad for 28 seasons and the women's program for seven.

Men's and women's track and field -- Lamar named Trey Clark as head coach. Clark has been an assistant with the program for five seasons and fulfilled interim head coaching duties during the 1999-00 season.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Rhode Island College hired Liz Legault as men's and women's assistant coach. Legault also teaches physical education and coaches girls' soccer and indoor track at the high-school level ... South Dakota State assistant track coach Wayne Haensel announced retirement plans, effective June 30. During his 27-year tenure on the coaching staff, Haensel also has worked as assistant and head football coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Northeastern named Ken Nichols as head coach ... Butler named Jennifer Kintzel as an assistant coach. Kintzel has been a graduate assistant volleyball coach and academic counselor in the athletics department ... Roy Martin resigned as head women's coach at Francis Marion, effective June 2, to teach and coach wrestling and girls' volleyball at Lee's Summit (Missouri) High School ... Christine Watkins resigned after three seasons as head women's coach at New Hampshire College.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Deng Yang was appointed as women's assistant coach at Missouri ... Bowling Green added James Neyhouse as an assistant coach. For the past two years, Neyhouse has been head coach, facility manager and sports information director at Thomas More ... Joel McCartney and Christy Mahi were added as assistants at Oklahoma. McCartney has been head coach at Bellevue University for four years and Mahi spent the 1998 and 1999 seasons as an assistant at Illinois ... Brian Heffernan was selected as assistant men's coach at Minnesota ... American chose Arlisa Hagan as women's assistant.

Wrestling assistants -- Robert Smith was chosen as assistant coach at Rhode Island. From 1968 through 1999, Smith fulfilled duties as an assistant coach and head coach at Coventry (Rhode Island) High School ... Rider added John Hangey as an assistant coach.

STAFF

Compliance assistant -- Heather Poor was chosen as assistant compliance coordinator at Belmont. Most recently, Poor has served as an assistant athletic trainer at the school.

Events -- Belmont selected Debbie Chenoweth as director of events.

Sports information -- Kansas State selected Doug Dull as sports information director ... Bill Behrns was promoted to director of sports information and publications at Loyola (Illinois). Behrns succeeds Ian Solomon, who resigned to become marketing and communications manager at EZLinks Golf.

Ticket services -- Bradley named Jeff Roche as ticket manager to succeed the retiring William "Corky" Robertson. Roche has been serving as assistant golf coach at the school for the past two years.

CONFERENCES

The Mid-Continent Conference announced the resignation of Brad Walker as assistant director of media relations, effective May 26. Walker accepted the position of director of communications for the West Coast Conference.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced the appointments of Barbara Church as senior associate commissioner, John Leonard as assistant commissioner and Ken Taylor as director of special events and ice hockey.

The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference appointed Rich Meckfessel as commissioner.

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association hired Mike Harris as director of communications. For the past four years, Harris has been associate director of marketing and assistant director of athletics media relations at Miami (Ohio). Harris replaces Sherry Skalko, who resigned as director of communications, effective May 12.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Brad Hostetter was selected as a membership services representative at the national office, effective May 8. For the past two years, Brad has been a compliance coordinator at Weber State ... John Painter was chosen as publications editor at the NCAA, succeeding Vanessa Abell, who resigned to join the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Painter has worked at the Association as a statistics coordinator since 1989.

CORRECTIONS

A list of television ratings appearing in the April 24 issue for selected cities for the final game of the Division I Men's Basketball Championship contained incorrect information for Kansas City. The correct rating for Kansas City was 19.3.

The amount in the 2000 Division II revenue-distribution schedule was listed incorrectly on page 2 of the May 8 issue of The NCAA News. Approximately $5,700 will be distributed to each member institution.

NOTABLES

The College Golf Foundation in cooperation with MasterCard International announced the following six collegiate men's and women's golfers as winners of the third annual MasterCard Graduate Scholarship Award: David Emanuelson, Northern Illinois; Jennifer Laine, Harvard; Colin Flannery, Northwood; Karen Rice, Rockhurst; Larry Gruver, Upper Iowa; and Erin Phillips, Macalester. The scholarship is given to graduating varsity college golfers who plan to continue their education in accredited postgraduate programs.

Gary Cunningham was chosen as the recipient of the 19th National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics/National Invitation Tournament Athletics Director Award. Cunningham has been athletics director at California-Santa Barbara for five years.

St. Joseph's (New York) head men's basketball coach Joe Maniaci was named as the NIT/Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association's Division III Coach of the Year. Maniaci, who also earned recognition as the co-coach of the year in the Skyline Conference, has been with the program for eight years.

Northwestern's Jess Daley and Arizona's Jenna Daniels were selected as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for April. Daley, a senior, won the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate and Daniels, also a senior, captured the Ping ASU Invitational.

Heather Brink, a senior gymnast at Nebraska, was named as the Honda Award winner as the top collegiate woman athlete in her sport for 1999-00. Brink, the Big 12 Conference and Region 3 Gymnast of the Year, became the first female gymnast from Nebraska to win the national all-around championship. She also won the NCAA championship on the vault.

Greensboro men's head golf coach Robert Linville was chosen to head the United States team in the USA-Japan Golf Series. The competition, which is being played for the 26th consecutive year, will be held June 27-29 at the Southern California Golf Association Member Course in Rancho Murrieta, California. Each country's 12-member team is composed of eight men and four women.

Bonnie Henrickson was appointed as head coach for the 2000 USA Basketball Women's R. William Jones Cup Team. Henrickson has been head women's basketball coach at Virginia Tech for the past three seasons and served as assistant coach for USA Basketball's 1999 Women's World University Games squad. Stephanie V. Gaitley, head coach at Saint Joseph's (Pennsylvania), and David "Rusty" Ponton, head coach at Grambling State, will be assistant coaches.

Jim Boeheim was selected as head coach for the 2000 USA Basketball World Championship for Young Men Qualifying Team. The squad is scheduled to compete in the 2000 COPABA World Championship for Young Men Qualifying Tournament July 19-23 in Riberao Preto, near Sao Paulo, Brazil. Boeheim has been head men's basketball coach at Syracuse for 24 seasons. Ray McCallum, head coach at Houston, and Jay Wright, head coach at Hofstra, have been named as assistants.

Luther College distance runner Johanna Olson was named recipient of the Honda Inspiration Award. The honor is given annually to the collegiate woman athlete who overcomes great physical adversity to contribute to the recognizable success of her team. Olson recovered from a brain tumor twice to earn all-America recognition and compete in the NCAA Division III national championship.

DEATHS

Brandon Rouse, a reserve defensive lineman at Clemson, died April 29 of a heart attack. Rouse, who was 20, was a redshirt sophomore.

J. Eugene Smith, former president at Eastern Connecticut State (then Willimantic State Teachers College), died April 20. Smith was 94.

Patrick J. Filley, former Cornell coach and athletics administrator, died April 13 after a long illness. Filley came to Cornell as an assistant football coach in 1945. After retiring from coaching in 1955, Filley spent the next 29 years as an administrator, including serving as assistant to the athletics director, ticket manager, athletics business manager, associate athletics director for operations and associate athletics director for scheduling.
