Negoesco announced plans to retire, effective at the end of the 2000 season. Negoesco has led the program for 38 years and tops Division I men's soccer coaches in wins with a 536-172-65 record.
Negoesco has captured five NCAA national championships during his tenure (1966, 1975, 1976, 1978 and 1980). In addition to leading the San Francisco program, Negoesco has been influential in building up youth soccer leagues in the Bay Area throughout his career. He will continue with the program as director of soccer, assisting with summer camp development and working with alumni to continually upgrade the soccer stadium.
A 1950 soccer all-American at San Francisco, Negoesco helped lead the school to a co-national championship.
Erik Visser, a 19-year assistant with the program, has been chosen as Negoesco's successor. Visser, who has fulfilled associate head coaching duties since 1991, also has been serving as assistant athletics director for academic services and compliance.

Tennessee renewed the contract of athletics director Doug Dickey through June 30, 2002 ... Arizona State selected Christine Wilkinson as interim athletics director, effective April 17 ... Wendell P. Jack was hired as athletics director at Hiram, replacing Bobby Thomas, who will return to full-time head football coaching responsibilities. Jack has been associate director of intercollegiate athletics, physical education and recreation at Cal Tech for the past four years ... Longwood named Donald L. Lemish as director of athletics. Lemish has been fulfilling interim athletics director duties at the school since last September.

Grand Valley State hired Lisa Sweany, associate athletics director, softball coach and women's assistant basketball coach at Tri-State University, to serve as senior woman administrator/assistant athletics director.

Day served as an assistant with the program this past season and will continue in a reduced capacity as an assistant football coach, a position he has held since 1998 ... Chris Weller, head coach at Maryland, was awarded a contract extension through the 2000-01 season ... Kevin Morris resigned as head coach at Fordham ... St. Francis (New York) appointed Christine Cunningham as head coach. Cunningham has been an assistant at Quinnipiac and Canisius ... Women's soccer -- Hamilton appointed Melissa Eging as head coach to replace Sue Viscomi, who will continue as associate athletics director. Eging most recently has been a women's graduate assistant at Bethany ... Mississippi State chose Scott Ebke as an assistant coach.
Women's soccer assistant -- Jennie Altherr was awarded assistant coaching duties at Mississippi State.
Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Conni Pomeroy announced her retirement as head diving coach at UC Irvine, effective June 30. Pomeroy has lead the program for 16 years.
Men's and women's tennis -- Widener chose Nicole Salinsky as head women's coach ... Ed Luck announced his resignation, effective March 17, after serving as head women's coach at Ferris State since 1992. Luck also was head men's coach from 1993 to 1996 ... DePauw head women's coach Beth Todd resigned, effective at the end of the 2000 season.
Men's and women's volleyball -- Sindie L. Shollenberger accepted head volleyball coaching and assistant softball coaching responsibilities at Hiram. Shollenberger has been an assistant women's volleyball coach at Ithaca for two seasons ... Deb Sazama was selected as head women's volleyball coach and assistant track and field coach at Defiance. Sazama succeeds Robin Pietryk, who will retain duties as head softball coach and head women's coordinator for the athletics department. For the past three years, Sazama has been head volleyball coach and assistant track and field coach at Shawano (Wisconsin) Community High School ... Geoff Carlston accepted duties as head coach at Concordia-St.Paul. Carlston, who succeeds Liz Perryman, has been coaching at Minnesota since 1998.

Communications assistants -- Hofstra appointed Jeremy Kniffin as senior assistant director of athletics communications and Stephen Gorchov as assistant director of athletics communications.
Equipment manager -- Georgia Southern appointed Stewart Carter as head equipment manager to succeed Greg Colson. Carter has been athletics equipment manager for the Fresno State Athletic Corporation since October 1997.
Sports information -- Matt Mero was hired as assistant sports information director at Plattsburgh State. Mero also will continue as head women's tennis coach at the school ... UC Riverside chose Ross French as sports information director. For the past three years, French has fulfilled sports information director duties at Redlands.
Strength and conditioning -- Wake Forest's Jeff Barnard resigned as assistant strength and conditioning coordinator to become strength and conditioning coach at Eastern Kentucky ... Pat Meyer was selected as strength coach at Memphis.
Strength and conditioning assistant -- Tulane selected Karr Shannon as assistant strength coach.
CONFERENCES
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced Julie Griffin as director of marketing for MAAC Properties ... Don Lucas was chosen as coordinator of football officials for the Sun Belt Conference.
ASSOCIATIONS
Barry Gorman, head men's soccer coach at Penn State, was chosen as vice-president of education on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's executive committee. Gorman has led the Penn State program for 12 years.
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association selected the following as Divisions I, II and III 2000 IKON/WBCA National Coaches of the Year: Division I -- Geno Auriemma, Connecticut; Division II -- Nancy Winstel, Northern Kentucky; Division III -- Nancy Fahey, Washington (Missouri). Auriemma has led the Connecticut program for 15 seasons and is a multiple-year winner of the Naismith National Coach of the Year award, Associated Press National Coach of the Year award and Big East Conference Coach of the Year award. Winstel has guided the Northern Kentucky program for 17 seasons and led the team to last season's NCAA Division II semifinals. Fahey's squads at Washington (Missouri) captured national championships in 1998 and 1999 and have set the NCAA women's basketball all-divisions mark for consecutive wins with 68.
Syracuse head men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim was named the winner of the Clair Bee Coach of the Year award, which honors a Division I basketball coach who has made the most significant contributions to the sport during the preceding year. Boeheim, who led his squad to 19 straight wins at the beginning of the 1999-00 season, has been head coach of the program for 22 seasons.
Herman B. Wells, chancellor at Indiana, died March 18. He was 97. Wells, who was recently selected as the school's man of the century, served as acting president at Indiana in 1937. He became president in 1938, a position he held until 1962 when he was appointed chancellor. In addition, Wells had been a professor emeritus of business administration since 1972.
John Wayland Campbell, former sports information director at Western State, died of cancer March 26. He was 65. Campbell assumed duties as director of information at Western State in 1973 and spent 25 years as director of sports information at the school. He was presented with Lifetime Achievement and 25 Years of Service awards during last summer's College Sports Information Directors Association convention.
Former Brandeis president Morris B. Abram died March 16. He was 81.
Richard Twohy, former president at Gonzaga, died March 16. Twohy was 86.
