Delaware head volleyball coach set to retire

Long-time Delaware head women's volleyball coach Barbara Viera has announced retirement plans. Viera's tenure spans 27 years and is the longest in the school's women's athletics history. She has built a 682-429-4 record at Delaware, and her overall record of 687-434-4 includes a one-year run as head coach at Springfield.

Viera's squads have made postseason national tournament appearances at the 1975 and 1979 Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women championships and the 1992 and 1994 National Invitational Volleyball Championships. Her teams also captured America East Conference crowns in 1992 and 1994.

Viera was named East Coast Conference coach of the year in 1986 and America East Conference coach of the year in 1992, 1994 and 1996. A member of the American Volleyball Coaches Assocation board of directors and chairperson of the organization's education and publications committee, Viera is a 1963 graduate of Massachusetts. She also has earned a master's degree and completed doctoral work at Springfield.

Drake appointed Jean Berger and Mike Cigelman as interim co-athletics directors ... Michigan awarded interim athletics director duties to William C. Martin. Martin, president of First Martin Corporation, a real estate development company, succeeds Tom Goss, who resigned ... Ron Maestri announced plans to retire as athletics director at New Orleans, effective at the end of March ... Griz Zimmerman was named athletics director at Saginaw Valley State. Previously, he was assistant athletics director at Southern Methodist.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Gail F. Maloney was named as senior associate athletics director at Buffalo State. Maloney will relinquish her position as head women's basketball coach at the school, a position she has held for 21 years.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Wichita State chose Brent Seebohm as assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions. Seebohm most recently has been assistant athletics marketing director at Fresno State ... Merchant Marine elevated Tim McNulty to assistant athletics director for facilities.

COACHES

Baseball -- Brian Taylor was promoted to head coach at Merchant Marine ... West Chester's Jack Hopkins resigned as head coach. The school appointed assistant coach Dave Willman to succeed Hopkins as interim head coach.

Baseball assistants -- Rhode Island College selected Robert O'Toole as an assistant coach. O'Toole played professionally for the Baltimore Orioles organization from 1996 to 1998 ... Susquehanna named Matt Kazmierczak and Sean Noonan as assistants.

Men's basketball -- Charles Bradley resigned as head coach at Loyola Marymount, effective at the end of the season ... Bob Hawking resigned as head coach at Cal State Fullerton ... Harry Thayer was selected as interim head coach at Delaware State ... Pat Kennedy, head coach at DePaul, agreed to a contract extension through 2008 ... Bobby Cremins announced plans to retire as head coach at Georgia Tech. Cremins has led the program since 1981 ... John Lembezeder resigned as head men's basketball and head men's golf coach at Loras to become national sales manager at Mi-T-M Corporation in Iowa ... Kutztown head coach Jeff Jones announced retirement plans, effective August 4 ... Western Maryland's Nick Zoulias retired after 11 seasons as head coach. The school appointed assistant coach Kevin Selby as interim head coach ... Bill Dooley resigned as head coach at Delaware Valley. Dooley has been head coach for two years.

Women's basketball -- Baylor head coach Sonja Hogg announced retirement plans, effective at the end of the season. Hogg previously coached at Louisiana Tech, where she won national championships in 1981 and 1982 ... Barb Smith, head coach at San Diego State, was awarded a two-year contract extension ... Armstrong Atlantic head coach Lynn Jarrett resigned ... Tom Cooney retired as head coach at LeMoyne, effective August 11 ... Kathy Halligan, head coach at Texas-Pan American, was reassigned within the athletics department ... Iowa's Angie Lee resigned as head coach.

Women's basketball assistants -- Texas-Pan American released assistant coaches Rod Lee and Bobby Brown.

Men's and women's cross country -- Anderson's Doug Martin resigned as cross country and track coach.

Field hockey -- Goucher added Kim Donoghue Murdock as head coach.

Field hockey assistant -- Sally Northcroft was selected as an assistant coach at Ball State. Northcroft, a 1999-00 Honda Award winner for field hockey and a 1999-00 NCAA Today's Top VIII honoree, succeeds Dina Borrelli Hillmann.

Football -- Ken Karcher was named head coach at Liberty ... Chattanooga selected Donnie Kirkpatrick as head coach ... Eureka head coach Nick Fletcher resigned after five years to become head coach at Denison ... Steve DaPrato was chosen as head coach at New Mexico Highlands.

Football assistants -- David Blackwell was added as defensive assistant coach at Pittsburgh ... Virginia moved defensive backfield coach Art Markos to wide receivers coach; running backs coach Bob Price to defensive backs coach; wide receivers coach Andre Powell to running backs coach; linebackers coach David Turner to defensive tackles coach; and defensive line coach Ty Smith to defensive ends coach. The school also awarded additional linebacker coaching duties to defensive coordinator Rick Lantz ... James Podewell was chosen as defensive backs coach at Cal Poly. For the past three seasons, Podewell has been an assistant at UNLV ... Iowa named Reese Morgan as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator ... Ken Greene was appointed as defensive backs coach at Purdue ... Syracuse chose Steve Bush as secondary coach, Jim Hoffer as tight ends coach, Jerry Assinaro as special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator, and Dennis Goldman as wide receivers coach. Syracuse also named Reggie Terry as director of football operations. Terry currently is finishing work on a doctorate in higher education from the school ... Paul Arslanian accepted defensive coordinator responsibilities at San Jose State, replacing Ronnie Jones. Arslanian most recently was defensive coordinator at Utah State in 1998 and 1999 ... Curt Cignetti was added as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State ... Oregon State appointed Craig Bray as defensive coordinator ... Joey Houston was awarded responsibilities as secondary coach at Tulane ... Texas Tech named Dana Holgorsen as assistant coach and Dennis Simmons as football quality control coordinator ... Keith Flynn was selected as assistant at Western Michigan. Flynn, who has been head varsity coach at Pine Crest (Florida) High School, will serve as running backs coach ... Cincinnati's Phil Earley resigned as offensive coordinator to fulfill similar duties at Nevada ... Scott Shafer was promoted to defensive coordinator, and Pat Narduzzi was selected as linebackers coach at Northern Illinois. Shafer has been an assistant with the program for five years and will continue to coach defensive backs. Narduzzi, who replaces Mike Mallory, has been an assistant at Rhode Island ... Michigan State appointed Jeff Stoutland as offensive line coach ... James Bell resigned as defensive coordinator at Wake Forest to assume defensive coordinator and secondary coaching duties at Indiana. Wake Forest also released wide receivers coach Gerald Carr ... Joe Barry resigned as linebackers coach at UNLV. The school selected Steve Johns as linebackers coach ... Mansfield added Paul Fuller as defensive line coach and Chris Woods as defensive coordinator. Fuller, who also will fulfill special teams and strength and conditioning coaching duties, has been an associate head coach at Bridgton Academy in Maine. Woods has served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Wittenberg since 1997 ... Boise State named Ted Monachino as defensive line coach ... Freddie Kitchens was appointed as a graduate assistant coach at LSU ... Rockford hired Joe Schlager as defensive coordinator and William Diesing as offensive coordinator.

Men's and women's golf -- Bill Rhudy accepted additional responsibilities as co-head coach of the men's and women's teams at Manchester. Rhudy, who also serves as vice-president of student development, will share duties with Roger Lundy ... St. Francis (Pennsylvania) chose Bill Shortencarrier as head women's coach ... Todd Selders was chosen as head women's coach at Southern Methodist. For the past three years, Selders has been men's assistant golf coach at Oklahoma.

Men's and women's golf assistant -- North Carolina awarded assistant women's coaching responsibilities to Amber Marsh.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- John Keogh was awarded head men's coaching duties at New Haven.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Susquehanna hired Alan Fitzgerald as assistant men's coach and Sandy Jenkin as assistant women's coach ... Williams hired Brody Bush as an assistant men's coach. Bush has been an assistant men's coach at Rutgers.

Men's soccer -- Matt McDowell was awarded head coaching duties at Regis (Colorado). For the past two seasons, McDowell has been head assistant men's and women's coach at Oral Roberts ... Joe Barroso resigned as head men's coach at Bridgeport to become head women's coach at Sacred Heart. Bridgeport selected Brian Quinn as Barroso's successor ... Notre Dame appointed Chris Apple as interim head coach ... Skidmore head coach Jack Huckel resigned.

Women's soccer -- UNLV hired Dan Abdalla as head coach ... Berhane Andeberhan was selected as head coach at Cornell. Andeberhan, who has been an assistant coach and technical advisor with the program for six years, succeeds Randy May ... Dartmouth awarded Erica Walsh head coaching duties ... J.D. Kyzer was named as head coach at Chattanooga ... Caldwell's Louise Byrnes resigned as head coach, effective immediately ... Jay Entlich was chosen as head coach at Tampa. Entlich has spent the last two years as an assistant women's coach at Mississippi.

Women's soccer assistant -- Donna Fishter was awarded goalkeeper coaching duties at Central Florida. Fishter spent 1999 as head women's soccer coach at Trinity Prep School.

Softball -- Jason Simpson was added as head softball coach and football secondary coach at Millsaps.

Softball assistants -- Susquehanna appointed April Metzger as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's swimming assistant -- Wayne Norris was selected as assistant coach at North Carolina State.

Men's and women's tennis -- St. Francis (Pennsylvania) appointed Frank Spaid as head women's coach.

Men's and women's tennis assistant -- Wheaton (Massachusetts) hired John Martellino as assistant men's coach.

Men's and women's track and field -- Gary Purinton was chosen as head men's and women's coach at Wofford ... Kansas will not renew the contracts of track and field and cross country coach Gary Schwartz and his staff after the outdoor season ... Worcester Tech named Dan Green as head women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Randi Kunkel accepted duties as an assistant men's and women's track and field coach at Susquehanna.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Manchester head women's coach Eric Field resigned, effective at the end of the academic year ... Hardin-Simmons awarded head women's coaching duties to Krystal Brodbeck, a 1999 graduate and four-year volleyball letter-winner at the school. Brodbeck succeeds Holly Tarter, who became head coach at Centenary (Louisiana) ... Reed Sunahara was named head coach at Cincinnati, replacing Laura Alford. Sunahara has been an assistant with the program for three seasons and most recently served as interim head coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Ball State men's assistant coach Craig Skinner resigned to become an assistant women's coach at Nebraska ... Ball State chose Kevin Furnish as an assistant men's coach.

STAFF

Administrative -- Nicci Hays was elevated to athletics department recruiting coordinator at Merchant Marine.

Athletic training assistant -- Saint Joseph's (Indiana) appointed David Compton as assistant athletic trainer to succeed Liz Gillem.

Communications -- Bob Moore resigned as assistant director of athletics communications at Ball State, effective March 7. Moore has held the position since 1990.

Development -- Michael L. Hilliard was named as director of development for the athletics department at Michigan. Hilliard has been director of development for Michigan's business school for the past three years.

Sports information -- Kimberly Parker resigned as sports information director at Mount Holyoke to become sports producer at ihigh.com, an Internet company in Lexington, Kentucky ... Hardin-Simmons hired Chad Grubbs to succeed Kevin Carmody as sports information director. Grubbs is a 1999 graduate of Oklahoma State and has been a sports information intern at the Southland Conference.

Strength and conditioning assistants -- Georgia Southern added Kelly Neuhauser as assistant strength and conditioning coach. Neuhauser, who succeeds Tom Melton, has been a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at Illinois State ... UNLV named Erik Munson as assistant strength and conditioning coordinator.

Ticketing services -- Stephanie Nett assumed assistant ticket manager duties at Cincinnati. Nett was women's ticket manager at Minnesota from 1998 to 1999.

CONFERENCES

Leslie Brown accepted responsibilities as assistant director of communications and championships with the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. Brown has been working in the media relations and marketing department at Belmont for two and a half years ... The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference appointed Christopher Hodgson as academic fellow for compliance ... Rich Weiler, coordinator of men's basketball officials for the Mid-Continent Conference, announced retirement plans, effective at the end of the 1999-00 season.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Donald Baber and Connie Justice were hired as programmer analysts II. Baber has been a senior programmer/analyst at DSI/NPS in Indianapolis, and Justice has served as a systems research engineer with the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology in Indianapolis.

CORRECTION

A Division I wrestling championships preview printed in the February 28 issue of The NCAA News contained the incorrect dates and site for the event. The championships will be held March 16-18 in St. Louis.

DEATH

Former UCLA athletics director Robert Fischer died of congestive heart failure at the age of 78. Fischer, who came to UCLA as an assistant athletics director in 1964, served as athletics director from 1980 to 1983.

Sever Toretti, former Penn State assistant football coach, died February 20. Toretti, 83, was an assistant from 1949 to 1963 and worked as an assistant athletics director responsible for recruiting for 16 years after stepping down as an assistant coach.

Former Louisville basketball coach Bernard L. "Peck" Hickman died February 19 at the age of 88. Hickman led the Louisville program for 23 years beginning in 1944 and was athletics director at the school for 20 years, before relinquishing those duties in 1973.

Paul Manasseh, former public relations and sports information director at LSU, died February 20. He was 79. Manasseh, who was one of the first to use highlight film to publicize teams, worked in both the professional and collegiate ranks including serving as sports information director at LSU for 12 years, executive director of the Independence Bowl and freelance columnist and media relations staff member for the Sugar Bowl.

Wofford assistant football coach Bruce Johnson died after collapsing while watching conditioning drills. Johnson, who had been with the program as defensive coordinator for about a month, formerly coached at Citadel, South Carolina, North Carolina, Air Force, North Carolina State, Marshall and LSU. He was 52.

Former East Stroudsburg coach and athletics administrator Howard R. DeNike died February 17. He was 95. DeNike's 40-year stint at East Stroudsburg included serving as head men's track and field coach, men's and women's swimming coach and 27 years as head men's soccer coach. In addition to teaching, he completed tenures as acting director of athletics, dean of men and director of intramural sports for men. DeNike developed the first soccer scoring book in the United States and helped establish the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 1941.

Maurice Batie, assistant women's volleyball coach at Minnesota, died recently after collapsing while playing recreational basketball. He was 36.
