The American College Football Coaches Association recently announced the members of the 2000 AFCA Good Works Teams, which honor college football student-athletes and student support staff who show exceptional dedication to community service and to the betterment of the communities in which they live.
There are two 11-man teams, one for Division I-A and one for Divisions I-AA, II, III and NAIA.
The University of Kentucky and the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota) once again each have a player on this year's teams, extending each school's streak to three consecutive years.
Nominations are submitted to the AFCA by institutions' sports information directors.
Student-athletes from this year's teams coordinated fund-raising efforts for charitable causes; mentored children; built homes for Habitat for Humanity; worked with children and senior citizens in numerous programs; participated in overseas missions; and volunteered with Big Brothers, Special Olympics and the Boys & Girls Club organizations. They collected canned food for the hungry, spoke to at-risk youth about gangs and visited patients in hospitals.
"The Good Works Teams attempt to recognize those student-athletes who go above and beyond in service to others," said AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff. "The AFCA is proud to honor those who have a positive impact in their communities."
