Roy Williams, men's basketball coach
University of Kansas
Chicago Sun-Times

Discussing proposed NCAA legislation that would affect the summer recruiting period

"There's not enough trust. The NCAA doesn't think the coaches should be involved because they think (coaches) have their own agenda. We're asked to conduct ourselves in the manner they tell us, but we aren't listened to very much."

James Dickey, men's basketball coach<
Texas Tech University
Chicago Sun-Times

"I don't think we can legislate what we allow (summer leagues) to do, but we can legislate what we allow the (college) coaches to do. It would help if we dealt with players when they're in a high-school setting."

Tom Asbury, men's basketball coach
Kansas State University
Chicago Sun-Times

"Eliminate the fall signing period. If you do that, summer becomes an evaluation period the way it used to be and not a recruiting period."

Pete Gillen, men's basketball coach
University of Virginia<
Daily Press, Inc.

"I would like to see them ban (summer recruiting). There are some wonderful people in the AAU, but there are some people who are in it for the wrong reasons. I'd like to see the high-school coaches have more control over their own players because those people -- I'd say about 99 percent of them -- really care about their players. Some AAU people do, but some don't. The more we can get the high-school coaches back in control, I'm for it."

Bobby Cremins, men's basketball coach
Georgia Institute of Technology
Daily Press, Inc.

"How are we going to evaluate? How are we going to have an early signing period? I agree with most of the coaches that we do need an evaluation period, particularly with early signing."

Mike Krzyzewski, men's basketball coach
Duke University
Daily Press, Inc.

"Whether that (eliminating the summer recruiting period) is the proper solution, I don't know. I think most coaches would not be in favor of that because people would not be able to see as many kids."

Kenneth A. Shaw, chancellor
Syracuse University
Des Moines Register

"I don't think we are going to be able to tell young men they can't play their sport during the summer. Instead, we need to assure ourselves that these camps are run correctly. Some of the changes (in the basketball issues package) people are going to like, some of the changes people aren't, but one thing will be true: We are going to try to do the right thing for athletics as part of the academic missions of our institutions."

Hiring practices

Jim Haney, executive director
National Association of Basketball Coaches
USA Today

"We became aware that the NCAA and (President) Ced Dempsey had taken some steps in hiring African Americans for top positions. But as we looked around at campuses, we found the model was not being followed there at any level, Divisions I, II or III. There needs to an emphasis, progress, change. Talk is cheap. So often in our fast-paced world, we're willing to accept statements from people as to their good intentions and go on to other important issues, just assuming things are going to be done. The lesson here is, you don't go away on something as important as this."

Hazing

Richard Jaeger, director of athletics
Dartmouth College
The Dartmouth

"I've heard about incidents and antics that go on around certain fraternities and sororities. I don't think you can make the connection that since something goes on at a house and 80 percent of its members are on a team, that it's a team-related thing. It's not a team-related thing, it's a house-related thing."
