Winter Championships Preview -- Division III Men's Basketball

Field: A total of 48 teams will be selected. A total of 33 automatic bids will be taken by conference champions (Pool A). There is no limit to the number of teams that the Division III Men's Basketball Committee can select from a region. A total of nine bids will go to independent teams and those from conferences that do not meet automatic qualifications (Pool B). Six will go to deserving conference teams not already selected (Pool C).

Dates and sites: First-round games will be March 2 on campus. Second-round games will be March 4 on campus. Sectionals will be March 10-11 on campus. The semifinals and final will be March 17-18 at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Virginia.

Information/results: The fax-on-demand number is 770/563-1133 (pin code 1915). The request numbers are 5059 for semifinals, 5060 for third-place-game results and 5061 for championship-game results. Championship-game results will be published in the March 27 issue of The NCAA News.

Championship notes: Hampden-Sydney, last year's runner-up, was the only men's team in the country in any division to finish its regular season undefeated. The Tigers completed a 24-0 campaign. Wisconsin-Platteville is the two-time defending champion after posting a 76-75 double-overtime win over the Tigers in last year's championship game.
