At about the same time that the women's tennis team from Trinity (Texas) was winning its first title, the men's team pulled off the same feat, downing Gustavus Adolphus, 4-3, in the championship match of the Division III Men's Tennis Championships May 20 at Kalamazoo.

The road to the finals was a rocky one for the Trinity men. The Tigers pulled out a 4-3 victory against favored UC Santa Cruz in the semifinals, then followed that with another close call against Gustavus Adolphus in the finals.

In the championship match, Trinity fell behind early, but rallied to even the match at 3-3. Junior Ed Rahn played in the decisive match at No. 4 singles, winning the third set, 6-3, to give the Tigers their long-awaited title.

Head coach Butch Newman, who was with the women's team, said, "I just have to slap myself to make sure this is real." Newman said both his men's and women's teams "are such a tight, cohesive unit," and for that alone, they were able to pull out wins in the finals.

In the third-place match, UC Santa Cruz handed Williams a 4-1 defeat.

In the individual competition, the UC Santa Cruz duo of Thomas Oechel and Peter Gladkin won the doubles crown, and the singles title went to Kayvon Fatahalian of Carnegie Mellon. For Oechel, it was the second straight year in which he had been on the winning doubles team. He also entered the tournament as the defending singles champion but was ousted by Trinity's Sloan Rush in the semifinals.
