Lincoln (Pennsylvania) continued its dominance of the Division III track and field scene by capturing its third straight indoor championships March 10-11 at Illinois Wesleyan.

The Lions, who also won the 1999 outdoor title, relied on its traditional strength in the sprints and hurdles to compile 59 points. North Central was second with 40 points.

For the second straight year, Lincoln scored 40 points in the 55- and 400-meter dashes, and the 55-meter hurdles. Dayne Ross won the 55 dash in 6.25 seconds, with teammates Chaz Clemons and Roland Whiting claiming fourth and sixth places, respectively.

Ross was second in the 55 last year, just one-hundredth of a second behind the winner.

The Lions earned nine points in the 400 dash, as Steve Mitchell was the runner-up and Adrian Worrell was sixth. Mitchell moved up one spot from his 1999 third-place finish. Rich Dixon of Rowan repeated as the champion in the 400 in a time of 48.74 seconds.

Lincoln's best event was the 55 hurdles. Christopher Cobbs reclaimed the title he first won in 1998 with a mark of 7.33 seconds. Ironically, he placed second in the event last year to teammate Alonzo Wiggins. Cobbs' victory this year stretched Lincoln's winning streak in the event to five years.

Kevin Taylor added a third-place effort in the 55 hurdles for the Lions, who also received a major boost from triple-jump champion Justin Jarmon.

North Central, which has won the last three Division III cross country championships, relied on its distance crew to finish second for the first time. Tim McCoskey took first place in the 1,500-meter run and anchored the Cardinals' victorious distance medley relay unit.

Ed Riegert placed third and Charles Califf sixth in the 1,500 for North Central. Cardinals Jeff Hansen and Colin Young secured the same places in the 5,000-meter run, with Hansen third and Young sixth.

In addition to Dixon, Brad Parris of McMurry repeated as a champion. Parris cleared 16 feet, 10 3Ž4 inches to win the pole vault.

Wheaton (Massachusetts) uses balance to successfully defend women's championship

Wheaton (Massachusetts) had three individuals score in track events and three in field events as it repeated as the Division III women's indoor champion March 10-11 at Illinois Wesleyan.

The Lyons used the individual performances and a championship-clinching win in the meet-ending 1,600-meter relay to total 47 points. Lincoln (Pennsylvania) earned second place with 41 points.

"I'm really proud of this team," said Wheaton head coach Paul Souza. "Everyone came through. Everybody scored that needed to, right down the line.

"We made this our goal at the beginning of the year and everybody worked hard. It was a great thing to see."

Deshawnda Williams headed Wheaton's track contributors as she won the 400-meter dash and placed fifth in the 55-meter dash. With her third consecutive victory in the 400, she became just the sixth athlete in the championships' 16-year history to win the same event at least three years in a row.

Tenille Johnson added eight points to the Lyons' ledger as the runner-up in the 55 hurdles for the second straight year. Angela Mullins added a sixth-place finish in the 400.

Williams, Johnson and Mullins joined with Niara Woods to win the 1,600 relay. The Lyons led Lincoln, 37-35, going into the event, and widened their lead by winning while Lincoln placed third.

Wheaton's work in the field was highlighted by Beth Castagno's second-place finish in the high jump and Shimera Daniels' third-place effort in the triple jump.

Lincoln was in a position to capture the title due in large part to the efforts of Rhondale Jones. For the second consecutive year, Jones swept first places in the 55 dash and 55-meter hurdles.

Vernick Smith finished second in the 400 and Mea Williams third in the 55 dash for Lincoln.

Laura Rosenberger of Eastern Mennonite became the first women's pole vault champion in Division III as she cleared 12 feet, 4 inches in the inaugural event.

Caitlin Murphy of Tufts joined Deshawnda Williams and Jones as repeat champions. Murphy won her second straight 800-meter run title.

Defending Division III cross country individual champion Rhaina Echols of Chicago added a meet record in the 5,000-meter run to her resumé. Echols shaved more than seven seconds off the previous mark with her winning time of 16 minutes, 41.49 seconds.

Meet records also were set by Kristy Laramee of Middlebury in the high jump (5 feet, 10 3Ž4 inches) and April Felt of Hamline in the 20-pound weight throw (56 feet, 6 3Ž4 inches).
