The NCAA News

Facilities: Susquehanna University has begun construction on a $14 million expansion and renovation of its sports and fitness facilities. Eventually, the school will have a new football and track stadium, field house, baseball field, and tennis courts. In the meantime, four of Susquehanna's spring sports teams have been displaced while their facilities are being replaced, resulting in some creative arrangements. Susquehanna administrators report that it's not unusual to see pole vaulters running up the middle of campus or the baseball team shagging fly balls in a nearby field. The men's tennis team, which lost half of its campus courts to the construction, is splitting its time between campus and a local high school. Construction on the football field, track stadium and baseball field will be completed this fall.

Milestones: Donna Newberry, Muskingum College, 500 wins in softball. Newberry ranks fourth all-time in Division III softball victories, and her teams have made the NCAA tournament nine times. In recent summers, Newberry has traveled to Guyana in South America where she delivers donated softball equipment. "I did it as a favor to my brother (who also visits Guyana)," she said. "The other Ohio Athletic Conference schools have donated all their used equipment to take with me -- now there is enough stuff for 40 teams. They have a tournament (at the end of my trip every year), and you would think it's the World Series. It's fun for me to go back to teach the basics, to tell them which hand the glove goes on." ... Lynn Stockman Imergoot, Washington University (Missouri), 350 victories in women's tennis. Imergoot, who also serves as the school's assistant athletics director, is in her 25th year as coach. She began the women's tennis program at Washington in 1975 in response to Title IX legislation. Imergoot was honored as women's tennis coach of the year by the University Athletic Association in 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1995 ... Jim Miller, University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, 300 victories in baseball. At the beginning of this season, Miller was 36th in winning percentage among active Division III baseball coaches and 42nd in number of victories ... Larry Shank, Heidelberg College, 100 victories in wrestling. Shank has closed out his career as a wrestling coach, but he plans to remain at the school as assistant athletics director and head football coach.

Miscellaneous: The Simpson College men's basketball team became just the 39th Division III men's basketball program to win 1,000 games with a victory over Central College (Iowa) this year. Simpson has played varsity men's basketball since 1901 ... The University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, has introduced a new intercollegiate athletics logo. The logo represents the head of a Warhawk, the school's mascot. The design, produced by Ripon Athletics of Ripon, Wisconsin, replaces a design in use since 1978 when the school changed from a Native American symbol to a drawing depicting a bird with wings and feet extended. The new logo retains the Warhawk name and the school colors of purple and gray with white and black accents. The mascot attending athletics events will still be known as "Willie Warhawk."
