The Lords of Kenyon secured their place in NCAA history by winning their 21st consecutive Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 18 at Emory. Kenyon piled up 10 event titles and five runner-up finishes for 670 1/2 points and the most titles in any sport at any level of NCAA competition.

Kenyon head coach Jim Steen said, "We swam with a lot of pride, a lot of class, and a lot of perseverance in a meet that was filled with exceptional teams."

Kenyon's lead was so massive that the nearest team, Denison, finished more than 300 points behind with a total of 317. Emory took third with 287 points.

Six meet records were set during the competition, including one by two-time Swimmer of the Meet Aaron Cole of Denison. Cole broke his own record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.43. He also won the 50-yard freestyle and contributed to his team's win in the 200-freestyle relay.

"I wanted to do the best I possibly could coming into this meet," Cole said. "I've given everything I've had every day in swimming the past four years and awards like this are just a result of that."

Kenyon's Tom Rushton won the 400-yard individual medley for the second consecutive year. He also won the 500-yard freestyle for the third straight year, making him only the second swimmer in Division III to accomplish that feat. Rushton contributed to the Lords' win in the 400-yard medley relay, which set a meet record of 3:30.39.

In diving, Jeff Gorton of Kalamazoo won both the one- and three-meter springboard events. His sweep of both events was the first for any diver since Pomona-Pitzer's Brian Forster did it in 1994.

"In the previous three years I've come up a little bit short, but I couldn't have asked for a better ending to my career than this," Gorton said.

Overall, 11 different athletes representing six schools won individual events. Kenyon dominated the relays, winning four of five races for the sixth time in the past seven years.
