New members appointed to begin terms on Councils

New members were elected to both the Division III Presidents Council and the Division III Management Council recently. All began their service immediately following the NCAA 2000 Convention, and all have terms that expire in January 2004.

Robert H. Chambers III

A new member of the Presidents Council, Chambers has been the president of Western Maryland College, as well as a professor of English at the school, since 1984.

Prior to that, he was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of English at Bucknell University, and before that Chambers was an assistant professor of English and dean in Davenport College at Yale University.

Chambers has undergraduate degrees in economics and business from Duke University, and in literature and religion from Yale University. He also has a doctorate in American civilization from Brown University.

Chambers serves on the board of directors for the Council of Independent Colleges and on the board of trustees of the Maryland Citizens for the Arts. He also serves on the board of directors of the Independent College Fund of Maryland as well as on the Governor's Education Policy Transition Committee. Chambers is a former chair of the Centennial Conference's executive committee.

Peter W. Stanley

A new member of the Presidents Council, Stanley has been president of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges since 1991.

Previously, he was the director of the education and culture program at the Ford Foundation. Prior to that, he was dean of the college at Carleton College and a lecturer and assistant professor of history at Harvard University. Before that, Stanley founded and chaired the Committee on Asian Studies at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

Stanley graduated magna cum laude from Harvard and was a Frank Knox Memorial Fellow at Cambridge University. Stanley earned both his master's degree and his doctorate at Harvard.

Stanley is chair of the board of directors of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, a trustee of The College Board and chair and director of the Hitachi Foundation's strategic planning committee. Stanley also is a director of the James Irvine Foundation, a member of the executive committee and national advisory council of the National Foreign Language Center, and a member of the Humanities and Sciences Council at Stanford University.

He is the author of numerous books, articles and book reviews, and he has testified before the U.S. Congress on United States-Philippines relations.

Christopher Bledsoe

A new member of the Management Council, Bledsoe has been the director of athletics at New York University for the past four years. Previously, he was the athletics director at Pace University, and prior to that he served Pace as sports information director and assistant athletics director.

Bledsoe earned a bachelor's degree from Fairfield University and a master of business administration degree from Pace.

Bledsoe has served as chair of the New York Athletic Conference, and he has served the Eastern College Athletic Conference as vice-president and executive council and finance committee member. Bledsoe has served as president of the Mideast Collegiate Conference, the Liberty Football Conference and the Big Apple Basketball Conference.

He also has served as a member of the NCAA Division II Management Council Transition Team.

Lon Boike

A new member of the Management Council, Boike has been the athletics director at Clarke College since 1993. Previously, he was a coach and associate athletics director at the school. Prior to that, he was athletics director and basketball coach at the College of St. Teresa, and he also taught and coached at the high-school level in Minnesota.

Boike earned an associate's degree from Willmar Junior College, a bachelor's degree in kinesiology, health and coaching from Southwest State University and a master's degree in physical education, health and recreation from Northern State University.

Boike currently serves on the NCAA Division III Interpretations and Legislation Committee, and he is the president of the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference.

William Eng

A new member of the Management Council, Eng has been the director of athletics at Bernard M. Baruch College for 22 years. Previously, he was an instructor in the physical and health education department at the school.

Eng also is a professor and former chair in the department of student services at Baruch, where he oversees and coordinates the academic program, facilities and recreational programs.

Eng earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the City College of New York and his doctorate from New York University.

He is the women's cross country coach, and he also coached the women's tennis team at Baruch, winning three City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) championships. Eng also serves as CUNYAC's commissioner of women's tennis and cheerleading, and he is the immediate past president of the conference.

John Galgano

A new member of the Management Council, Galgano is a student-athlete at Manhattanville College, where he is a senior majoring in history.

A team captain and starting third baseman, Galgano won Rookie of the Year honors for the Skyline Conference in 1997 and was named Eastern College Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 1998.

Galgano was appointed to the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in 1998, and he also assumed the presidency of his campus SAAC that same year. At the 1999 NCAA Convention, Galgano served on a panel during a discussion of sportsmanship and ethical conduct.

Galgano writes a recreation column for The Journal News in Westchester, New York, and he plans to pursue a career in law.
