The Division III Men's Golf Committee, which met July 12-14 in Indianapolis, voted to recommend an expansion of the tournament field from 120 to 135 participants.
The recommendation, which must be approved by the Division III Championships Committee, also would redefine district qualifications. If approved, the field would be expanded for the 2002 championships.
Alignments and district allocations also were discussed during the committee's meeting, but no action was taken.
The committee did make a change regarding the number of players in one group, which was four during last year's tournament, but will be three beginning with the 2001 event. The committee voted to make this change in an attempt to speed up play.
The committee also reviewed the 2000 championship and was pleased with the administration of the event, but agreed to investigate the possibility of allowing an additional practice day at future championships, at an institution's expense.
The group also reaffirmed that if the host institution is not selected as district representative, the host institution shall be selected as an at-large team participant.
In other items of note, the committee discussed the 2002 and 2003 championships sites and noted that Ohio Wesleyan University would host the 2003 championship, not the 2002 event as was originally planned.
The group will entertain bids for the 2002 championships. Interested parties should contact Leon Smith, NCAA assistant director of championships, at the national office. A final decision will be made on the 2002 championships by October 30, 2000.
