Kenyon claimed its 17th consecutive Division III Women's Swimming and Diving title March 11 at Emory, winning six individual titles and two relays and outscoring runner-up Denison by more than 200 points.

The emotional win came just two months after a team van accident claimed the life of co-captain Molly Hatcher (see related story below).

Kenyon tallied 619 1Ž2 points in the three-day meet. Denison finished second for the third straight year with 417 1Ž2 points. UC San Diego, behind swimmer of the year Jennifer Watanabe, was third with 355 1Ž2 points.

Kenyon jumped ahead during the first day of the meet with freshman Ashley Rowatt's victory in the 200-yard individual medley, a win in the 400-yard medley relay and a top finish in diving by Becky White on the one-meter board.

Erica Carroll, last year's swimmer of the year, scored a team-high 54 points for the Ladies with victories in the100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly. And Kenyon juniors Sarah Leone and Neala Kendall won individual titles during the final day of the meet in the 100- and 1,650-yard freestyles, respectively.

Relays were again pivotal in the Ladies keeping their championship streak alive with titles in the 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays and second-place finishes in the other three relay events.

Watanabe scored a meet-high 60 points for UC San Diego, including wins in the 200-yard backstroke and the 400-yard individual medley. The freshman also won the 500-yard freestyle with a record time of 4:55.48, which eclipsed the mark of 4:55.85 set in 1991.

Hope's Betsy Vandenberg set the only other record of the meet in the trials of the 200-yard breaststroke. She went on to win the event.

Kelly Stewart claimed the 50- and 200-yard freestyle events for Wheaton (Illinois), which finished fifth in the meet.

Kyle Kopnitsky finished third in both the one- and three-meter diving events and was named diver of the year for Allegheny, while Williams' Kit Koch was named diving coach of the year. Kenyon's Jim Steen was named co-coach of the year along with Jon Lederhouse of Wheaton (Illinois).
