Field can't keep up with Jones as Lincoln wins track title

The NCAA News

Rhondale Jones beat the sophomore slump, and in turn, Lincoln (Pennsylvania) defeated all challengers to win the Division III women's outdoor track and field title.

The Lions repeated as champion May 25-27 at North Central, due in large part to first-place finishes in four individual events and one relay. Lincoln compiled 65 points, with Christopher Newport second with 50 and Wheaton (Massachusetts) third with 48 1Ž2.

Jones was responsible for three of the individual victories as she repeated her 1999 wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the 100-meter high hurdles. She is the first athlete in Division III women's outdoor track and field history to win three events in a championship more than once.

Zanora Berry gave Lincoln a sweep of the hurdle events, as she won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 59.49 seconds. Jones anchored the Lions' victorious 400-meter relay unit, teaming with Mea Williams, Chisa Perry and Carla Cunningham.

Also scoring for Lincoln were Vernick Smith (second in the 400-meter dash) and Perry (fifth in the 100 hurdles).

"Rhondale Jones is a top-of-the-line athlete," said Lincoln head coach Cyrus Jones. "However, without the help of all seven women, this could not have been done."

Casey Taylor accounted for more than half of Christopher Newport's points. Taylor won the long jump, came in second in both the triple jump and 100-meter hurdles and placed seventh in the high jump. For good measure, she also ran a leg of the Captains' 400 relay team that was runner-up to Lincoln.

Wheaton received a first-place effort from Beth Castagno in the high jump.

Rhaina Echols of Chicago completed a stellar year by winning both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs. Echols was the individual champion in the 1999 Division III Women's Cross Country Championships and set a meet record in the 5,000 in the indoor track and field championship in March.

Joining Jones as repeat event winners from last year were Calvin's Megan Pierce in the 400-meter dash and Heather Pancake of Wheaton (Illinois) in the heptathlon. Calvin also successfully defended its 1,600-meter relay title, with Pierce in the anchor position for the second straight year.

The pole vault is now a part of all the NCAA women's track and field championships after debuting in the Division III outdoor meet this year. Laura Rosenberger of Eastern Mennonite earned the distinction of being the first winner, just as she did at this year's indoor championship, by clearing the bar at 11 feet, 11 3Ž4 inches.
