Facilities: Chapman University recently dedicated its newly built Judie Argyros Fitness Center. The 4,000-square-foot center includes equipment for cardiovascular training, circuit training and free-weight training. It will be used by Chapman's intercollegiate athletics teams and physical education classes, as well as for the general student body. The new center replaced a 10-year-old, 1,000-square-foot facility ... Stephens College has dedicated the John and Mary Silverthorne Sports Arena, a basketball and volleyball facility that offers seating for 320 spectators. Stephens, a women's college, added basketball in 1998 ... The University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, held a groundbreaking ceremony for its $14 million David L. Kachel/
D.L.K. Fieldhouse, which is scheduled for completion in December. The fieldhouse is the first portion of a project that also includes a renovation of the Williams Center facility. The fieldhouse will house four multipurpose courts, a running track and indoor practice space. The Williams Center renovation will include a new weight room and fitness center, four racquetball courts, a training room, new offices, classrooms and a computer lab. "The new and remodeled complex will provide a full array of high-quality and modern facilities for Wisconsin-Whitewater intercollegiate athletics, recreation, wellness and health physical education programs," said Jim Freer, assistant chancellor for administrative affairs. "The new facility will be a regional center for students, staff and the community."

Milestones: George Wares, Central College (Iowa), 500 victories in softball. Wares is just the second softball coach in NCAA Division III history to win 500 games. Now in his 16th season, Wares has piloted the Dutch to 14 consecutive playoff berths and three NCAA titles. Wares is the Division III victories leader among active coaches with a 502-182-2 career mark ... Dick Whitmore, Colby College, 500 victories in men's basketball. Whitmore, who also serves as the school's director of athletics, is in his 30th year as coach of men's basketball. Whitmore has accumulated 24 winning seasons and taken his teams to postseason competition 19 times in the last 26 years. He was honored as Maine College Coach of the Year in 1973, 1975, 1981, 1995 and 1997, and he was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 ... Larry Shank, Heidelberg College, 100 victories in wrestling. Shank has announced that his wrestling coaching career at Heidelberg will end after this season, but he will remain at the school as assistant athletics director and head football coach.
