Dan Hoekstra's second-place finish lifted Calvin to its first team title in the Division III Men's Cross Country Championships November 20.

Whitworth hosted the championships at Wandermere Golf Course in Spokane, Washington.

Calvin, which had three top-five finishes in its 15 previous appearances in the championships, totaled 65 team points. Keene State was runner-up for the second consecutive year with 87 points.

Hoekstra covered the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 57.1 seconds. Joel Klooster was 10th for the Knights, followed by Justin Momany-Pfreunder in the 14th position.

Keene State also had a pair of top-10 finishers, as Wilson Perez placed fourth and Joseph Dunham eighth. The Owls also had a third runner in the top 20 -- Matt St. Germaine in 18th place.

Calvin's winning advantage came in the fourth and fifth finishers. Paul Petersen and Cameron Harrison were 22nd and 27th, respectively, for the Knights. Keene State's fourth and fifth finishers placed 34th and 36th.

"This is a team that has lifted each other up all year and they did that again today," said Calvin coach Brian Diemer. "The guys supported each other by running in a pack and built off that energy.

"This team is a special one because of its support for one another."

Tim McCoskey of defending team champion North Central won the individual championship. McCoskey finished nearly 10 seconds ahead of Hoekstra with a time of 24 minutes, 47.8 seconds. He is the seventh individual winner from North Central, the most from one institution in meet history.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh placed third in the team scoring with 138 points, followed by North Central and Williams.
