Augsburg pins field to win sixth wrestling championship

Augsburg College posted one of the most dominant performances in NCAA history, winning its sixth Division III Wrestling Championships March 3-4 at Ohio Northern.

The Auggies claimed four individual titles and scored the second-highest point total in a Division III championships with 136. Runner-up Wartburg finished 48 points behind Augsburg, the second-largest gap in the championships' history.

The Auggies have won all their titles in the last 10 years, previously winning championships in 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997 and 1998.

Augsburg senior Josh Cagle was recognized as the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Most Outstanding Wrestler after capping a perfect 40-0 season with a 7-3 win over Montclair State's Rami Ratel in the 149-pound championship match. Nick Slack (174), Josh Clausen (197) and Ben Bauer (heavyweight) were Augsburg's other champions.

Bauer's title match was a turning point in the tournament. In the third period, Bauer scored an escape and then earned a penalty point against Rob Cosper of Lycoming to pull out a 2-1 win.

Montclair State placed third with 69 points, Brockport State was fourth with 451/2 points and Lycoming rounded out the top five with 421/2 points. Lycoming's four wrestlers each were named all-American.

Zac Weiglein of Wartburg won the 125-pound championship, his second straight title. Weiglein scored a 4-2 victory over Darin Bertram of Augsburg. Bertram was called for stalling late in the match to seal the win.

Upper Iowa's Jesus Wilson was crowned the 133-pound champ, decisively ousting Rick Schwietzberger of Buena Vista. Wilson, a freshman, won, 8-4.

Florian Ghinea of Montclair State won at 141 pounds, defeating Rob Anderson of Wisconsin-La Crosse for the second title of his career. Ghinea also was champion in 1997.

Mike Helm of Messiah earned the 157-pound trophy, outlasting Ryan Ciotoli of Ithaca, 5-1. Helm finished seventh in the championships a year ago.

Dominic Dellagatta of Montclair State was victorious at 165 pounds for the second year in a row, defeating Chris Fertig of the Coast Guard, 8-5, in the finals. Dellagatta was the 157-pound champion last year.

In the 184-pound division, Wisconsin-La Crosse's Jeremy Miller ended his collegiate career with a 9-3 victory over Ian Courter of Pacific (Oregon). Miller finished the season with a 23-1 record. Courter, a sophomore, was the No. 6 seed and upset second-seeded Nik Lewandowski from Augsburg in the semifinals.

Augsburg head coach Jeff Swenson was named NWCA Division III National Coach of the Year, the fourth time he has earned the honor.
