In a Division II swimming showdown, Cal State Bakersfield regained the crown it lost a year ago to Drury.

The Roadrunners defeated the Panthers, 687-630, for their 10th Division II Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Title March 8-11 at the Erie Community College Flickinger Aquatics Center in Buffalo, New York. The win eclipsed Cal State Northridge's record nine Division II titles.

The two powers dominated the four-day meet. All five relays were won by either Drury (200- and 400-yard freestyle, 400-yard medley) or Cal State Bakersfield (200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle), but the Roadrunners managed to keep a slight lead throughout the competition behind the efforts of senior Derek Guffey and freshman Vlasta Burda.

Guffey helped his team earn its two relay titles while claiming one of his own in the 200-yard backstroke, an event he has won for three straight years. His time of 1:45.53 in that event broke the Division II meet record of 1:46.29 posted by UC Davis' John Keppeler in 1994.

Burda shined in the freestyle events, taking the 200- and 500-yard titles and contributing to his team's win in the 800-yard freestyle relay. His time of 1:38.72 in the 200-yard freestyle qualified him for the Olympic Trials.

For Drury, Marcin Malinski earned his second consecutive 400-yard individual medley title with an Olympic Trials qualifying time of 3:52.64. Malinski also contributed to his team's win in the 400-medley relay.

Diver Dean LehmKuhler had a strong showing for the Panthers, winning the one-meter diving event with a score of 530.00 and finishing second in the three-meter dive with a score of 496.30.

Perhaps the most outstanding performances of the meet came from swimmers from two schools not in the running for the team title. Ouachita Baptist's John Berry claimed three individual titles. He won his third consecutive 50-yard freestyle title and reclaimed the 100-yard freestyle title that he lost a year ago to Drury's Valentin Serafimov with an Olympic Trials qualifying time of 44.46. Berry also won the 100-yard butterfly.

Indianapolis freshman Orel Oral won the 200-yard individual medley and posted an Olympic Trials qualifying time of 55.85 to take the 100-yard breaststroke.

Behind Cal State Bakersfield and Drury in the team standings, West Chester was a distant third with 277 points, followed by UC Davis with 275 and North Dakota with 249. Missouri-Rolla (225), Ouachita Baptist (200), Tampa (187 1/2), Truman State (155) and Delta State (143 1/2) rounded out the top 10.
