The NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee made several recommendations and decisions regarding preliminary- and final-round administration, district alignment and playing formats during its annual meeting February 7-10 in Phoenix.

The committee indicated that for the 2000 championship, preference would be given to first- and second-round hosts that can host matches Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday, unless there is a documented facility conflict. The committee also determined to give preference to regional hosts that can host on Friday and Saturday. Second preference would be given to Thursday and Friday hosts, and last preference would be given to Saturday and Sunday hosts.

Concerning regionals, the committee recommended that the name of the regions be determined after selections in efforts to reduce confusion about bracket assignments. A day of rest between regional semifinals and finals also was recommended.

In looking to enhance the championship, the committee reviewed issues related to television coverage of the championship. The committee will provide recommendations regarding the broadcast and explore other avenues for broadcasting the championship (for example, the Internet).

The committee also determined that at the 2000 championship, an autograph session will be conducted with participating teams after each semifinal and final match. The sessions are part of the overall effort to elevate the sport of volleyball and highlight student-athlete role models.

Regarding district alignments, the committee recommended minor revisions, with an emphasis toward balancing the districts numerically. Geographic proximity also is a consideration in determining district alignment. The committee reviewed the district ranking time line and procedures and decided to begin the ranking calls one week later. The last district ranking call will be conducted during the week of Thanksgiving.

In another action, the committee reviewed playing formats and decided to maintain the current format for the 2000 season, but encouraged coaches to experiment with a new point-per-play format this spring. The point-per-play format includes two out of three games to 35 points. Coaches will be surveyed in the spring for feedback. Any consideration for making a format change will be accompanied by input from officials, examination of existing score sheets and thoughtful consideration of other areas that may be affected by a format change.
