Individual victories in three events keyed UCLA's run to the team title at the Division I Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships March 10-11 at Arkansas.

The Bruins won their first women's indoor title with 51 points, 10 ahead of second-place South Carolina. Their previous best finish was second in 1995. They've also finished second in the last two outdoor championships.

UCLA received first-place performances from Tracy O'Hara in the pole vault, Keyon Soley in the long jump and Seilala Sua in the shot put. O'Hara upped the meet record in the pole vault to 14 feet, 6 inches, more than a half-foot beyond the 13 feet, 111/4 inches cleared by Fresno State's Melissa Price last year.

Sua added the indoor shot put title to the first place she won at the 1999 outdoor championships. The event was UCLA's best of the meet, as fellow Bruins Christina Tolson and Chaniqua Ross were third and sixth, respectively.

In addition to their shot-put exploits, Sua came in second and Tolson eighth in the 20-pound weight throw for another nine UCLA points.

"I've never been on a team that won a national championship," said Sua. "I just wanted to win and contribute to the team."

UCLA's remaining points came from Shakedia Jones' sixth-place finish in the 60-meter dash.

South Carolina needed only three events to compile its points. Mikele Barber won the 200-meter dash and placed second in the 400-meter dash for the Gamecocks. Teammates Me'Lisa Barber, Demetria Washington and Mechelle Lewis were third, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 200.

Washington crossed the finish line fifth in the 400, and South Carolina's 1,600-meter relay team rounded out the meet by capturing runner-up status behind Texas.

The host Razorbacks finished third with 37 points. Arkansas' distance runners accounted for all of its points, led by Amy Yoder's triumph in the 5,000-meter run.

Joining O'Hara as a meet-record setter was Tonya Carter of Florida State. The Seminoles' sprinter blazed to victory in the 60-meter dash in 7.21 seconds.

The only 1999 indoor individual champion to repeat was Villanova's Carrie Tollefson in the 3,000-meter run.
