Championships notes: Texas won the team crown in both 1998 and 1999, clinching its victories both years by placing first in the meet-ending 1,600-meter relay. The Longhorns should be in the running for a three-peat in what promises to be another close contest. Angel Patterson and Tanya Jarrett are currently Nos. 1 and 2 in the nation in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles for Texas, and teammate Erin Aldrich has the best high jump performance of the season. If the championship comes down to the 1,600 relay once again, the Longhorns appear ready with the division's best time so far. UCLA placed second to Texas each of the past two years and has the momentum after registering its first indoor track and field title in March. Seilala Sua returns to defend her discus throw and shot put titles, and Christina Tolson should add points in both the hammer throw and shot put. Southern California and LSU also will contend. Angela Williams (100-meter dash), Kinshasa Davis (200-meter dash) and Brigita Langerholc (800-meter run) each are first on the most recent performance list for Southern California. LSU, which won 11 consecutive outdoor track and field titles from 1987-97, will be led by sprinter Peta-Gaye Dowdie, hurdler Joyce Bates and triple-jumper Keisha Spencer.
