Field: A pool of 64 teams will enter regional play. Twenty-nine conference champions qualify automatically; the balance of the field is selected at large. Sixteen four-team, double-elimination regionals will be conducted with the winners advancing to eight, two-team super regionals. The super regionals will be best-of-three series. The eight super regional champions will qualify for the College World Series. The field will be announced May 22.

Dates and sites: Regional competition will be conducted May 26-28 at on-campus sites. Super regionals will be held June 2-4, also at on-campus sites. The College World Series is set for June 9-17 at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska. Creighton will serve as the host institution.

Scores and pairings from regional competition will appear in the June 19 issue of The NCAA News, and championship results will be published July 3.

Championship notes: Miami (Florida) won its third NCAA title in 1999, defeating rival Florida State, 6-5, in the championship game. The 1999 championship was the first with an expanded 64-team bracket, and the championship became the second NCAA championship to exceed 600,000 in attendance and also set records for the finals in Omaha. ... South Carolina and Florida State have shared the top spot in most polls for much of the season.
