Sports sponsorship: Birmingham Southern College has announced it will sponsor women's rifle in the 2001-02 academic year. The program will be fully funded with the maximum number of scholarships offered. Rifle, the 14th varsity sport offered at the university, will be the eighth women's sport. Birmingham Southern was approved for NCAA membership in August of 1999 and began its status as a provisional member in the 1999-00 academic year. The institution became a member of the Big South Conference in September.

Milestones: Hofstra University men's soccer coach Richard Nuttall notched his 100th career win with a 3-2 win over Northeastern in an America East Conference game earlier this month ... John Tart, men's soccer coach at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, won his 200th career game in a 3-0 win over Marquette University October 3.
