Arkansas winning the Division I Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships is nothing new -- the Razorbacks have now claimed 16 of the last 17 titles.

But the 2000 championships took on a different meaning as Arkansas wrapped up its fourth straight crown March 10-11 in its new, on-campus Randal Tyson Track Center.

The Razorbacks totaled 69 1/2 points to runner-up Stanford's 52. The Cardinal finished second for the third consecutive year.

"The crowd here was awesome," Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. "It was easily worth a few points and they definitely kept our guys going in the 3,000-meter run."

Going into the 3,000, Arkansas held a four-point lead over Stanford. While Melvin Lister and Jason Ward were on their way to finishing one-two in the triple jump for the Razorbacks, the 3,000 race still loomed large as Stanford had four entrants to Arkansas' two.

However, Arkansas outscored the Cardinal, 10-5, in the event as Sharif Karie and James Karanu placed third and fifth, respectively. "The feeling coming around the final two laps was awesome and something that I will always remember," Karie said

"The crowd was so loud that I could feel it as I ran."

Lister successfully defended his triple jump championship by leaping 54 feet, 7 1/2 inches. Ward was only one and one-half inches behind his teammate. An Arkansas athlete has won the triple jump five straight times and eight of the last nine years.

"Our guys had to feed off the crowd," McDonnell said. "When Ward made his jump the building almost collapsed."

In addition to his triple jump win, Lister stood atop the victory stand after placing first in the long jump.

Terrence Trammell of South Carolina and David Kimani of South Alabama also were double winners. Trammell took the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles. Kimani added titles in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs to his 1999 Division I cross country individual championship.

Stanford had one of the three meet records set in front of the raucous sellout crowd. The distance medley relay unit of Gabriel Jennings, Evan Kelty, Michael Stember and Jonathan Riley lowered the mark in the event to 9 minutes, 28.83 seconds.

Libor Charfreitag of Southern Methodist upped the record in the 35-pound weight throw to 78 feet, 3 3/4 inches, and Clemson's Shawn Crawford and Florida's John Capel both were timed in 20.26 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Crawford won the event, but both athletes will receive credit for the record.
