Iowa escapes rival's grip to continue stronghold on wrestling championship

ST. LOUIS -- It appeared that the streak was dead.

Iowa State had a commanding lead heading to the final round of the Division I Wrestling Championships, looking to end the string of archrival Iowa at five straight titles. The Cyclones had a 9 1/2-point lead heading to the final day, with four wrestlers in title matches, compared to just two for the Hawkeyes. As long as things went to form, Iowa State was primed to snag its first title since 1987.

But things didn't go to form for the Cyclones. Iowa stormed through the consolation session March 18, going 7-0 and grabbing 23 1/2 team points in the process.

That set up an evening match between Iowa's Eric Juergens and Iowa State's Cody Sanderson at 133 pounds that had a large bearing on the team race. Juergens defeated Sanderson for the sixth straight time on a takedown with 1:10 left in the first overtime period, all but sealing the title for the Hawkeyes.

"We talked before the day started that we could either leave everything on the mat or we could just go home," Juergens said. "The way the guys fought in consolations really put it in our hands. We didn't want to let them down, because what they did was amazing."

Doug Schwab followed at 141 and defeated Oklahoma's Michael Lightner for the championship.

Those wins put the finishing touches on Iowa's 20th national title. The Hawkeyes finished with 116 points, edging the stunned Cyclones' total of 109 1/2. Minnesota placed third with 80 points. Oklahoma (69 1/2) and Oklahoma State (66 1/2) completed the top five.

"I thought we had a chance when the day started, but we needed to wrestle offensively and not let up," said Iowa coach Jim Zalesky, who has never lost an NCAA tournament. "It seemed like once we had a few wins, we just started rolling."

The championships, held at the Kiel Center, set an attendance mark for Division I wrestling. The 16,795 fans who saw the championship bouts brought the six-session total to 96,944. The previous record was 90,064 at Northern Iowa in 1997.

In the heavyweight match, Minnesota's Brock Lesnar defeated Iowa's Wes Hand, 3-2, in a hard-fought bout that went to overtime after Lesnar was called for stalling. Lesnar won after an escape in the tiebreaker.

"This was the most important thing in my life since I lost (last year)," Lesnar said. "I couldn't let myself lose this match."

A bright spot for Iowa State was Cael Sanderson, who was not challenged throughout the tournament and won his second straight Outstanding Wrestler award. Cael Sanderson, a sophomore, defeated West Virginia's Vertus Jones, 19-6, at 184. Cael Sanderson has a 79-0 career record and won all five of his matches by major decision (two), technical fall (two) or pin (one).

Iowa's dominance of the event has not come easily. The Hawkeyes narrowly edged Minnesota in 1999.

"Someone will break their string," Iowa State coach Bobby Douglas said. "There are just too many solid programs out there and the younger coaches are really raising the bar. It's just a matter of time."
