Following an investigation into an alleged hazing incident, the University of Vermont has decided to cancel the remainder of its men's ice hockey season.

Vermont President Judith A. Ramaley made the announcement January 14.

Allegations of hazing surfaced last fall and intensified in December when a former Vermont player filed a lawsuit that outlined the details of the hazing. During the January 14 press conference, Ramaley also said that some players had withheld information during the investigation, which contributed to the school's decision.

"We received credible information indicating that a number of players were not completely truthful during our investigation of hazing allegations," Ramaley said. "While the players provided extensive information in the initial investigation, we now know that some intentionally misleading statements were made.

"This is very serious in that it shows that some team members were not completely truthful. As we said during our investigation, any indication that players did not provide accurate, truthful, complete information would result in serious consequences. This new information has triggered those consequences."

Ramaley had said from the beginning of the investigation that the school would take harsh measures "if additional information came to light that changed our understanding of the situation." She said the decision to cancel the remainder of the season was made only after consultation with men's ice hockey coach Mike Gilligan, athletics department administrators, the school's vice-president for student affairs and the school's Board of Trustees.

"The facts that hazing took place, and that some players were not completely honest about it, are deeply disappointing to me, to our athletics staff, and to our entire university community and the many people who care about our hockey program," Ramaley said.

The hazing incident involved freshman players who were allegedly required to participate in drinking games and assorted degrading acts.

Vermont's men's ice hockey team had posted a record of 5-9-3 up until January 14 and had 15 regular-season games remaining.
