The Division I Men's Basketball Committee has chosen the host sites for the first and second and regional rounds of the 2004 and 2005 championship that it will recommend to the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet. The cabinet will act on the recommendations when it meets in early February.
For 2004, the recommended sites for the first and second rounds of the East regional are the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York, and the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina. Both will be held March 18 and 20. The hosts for Buffalo are Canisius College, Niagara University and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference; the host for Raleigh is North Carolina State University. The recommended East regional site is Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, is the host for the March 25 and 27 event.
In the 2004 South region, the recommended first and second round sites on March 19 and 21 are Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri, and T.D. Waterhouse Center in Orlando, Florida. The Big 12 Conference is the Kansas City host; Stetson University is the Orlando host. The recommended South regional site is the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, with the Georgia Institute of Technology hosting.
The recommended Midwest sites for the 2004 first and second rounds on March 19 and 21 are Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, and the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. Ohio State University is the Columbus host; Marquette University is the Milwaukee host. The recommended 2004 Midwest regional site is the Trans World Dome in St. Louis, hosted by the Missouri Valley Conference. The dates for the Midwest regional are March 26 and 28.
For the 2004 West region first and second rounds, the recommended sites are the Pepsi Center in Denver and Seattle's Key Arena. The dates are March 18 and 10. The recommended site for the West region is America West Arena in Phoenix. The host is Arizona State University. The dates are March 25 and 27.
The site for the 2004 Men's Final Four, which already has been approved, is San Antiono's Alamodome.
For 2005, the recommended sites for the East first and second rounds are Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Centrum Centre in Worcester, Massachusetts. The hosts for the March 18 and 20 games are Davidson College for Charlotte and College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. The East regional recommended site for the March 25 and 27 games is the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York.
The recommended sites for the first and second round in the South are the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville, Tennessee, and The Myriad in Oklahoma City. The Ohio Valley Conference is the host for Nashville; the University of Oklahoma is the Oklahoma City host. The dates for the 2005 South first and second rounds are March 18 and 20. The recommended site for the 2005 South regional is the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. The University of Texas at Austin is the host for the March 25 and 27 games.
The Midwest 2005 recommended first and second round sites are the CSU Convocation Center in Cleveland; and the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. The hosts for the March 17 and 19 games are Cleveland State University for the CSU Convocation Center, and Butler University and the Midwest Collegiate Conference for Indianapolis. The 2005 Midwest regional recommendation is Chicago's Allstate Arena, with DePaul University serving as host. The dates are March 24 and 26.
The West region first and second round sites for 2005 are Boise State University Pavilion in Boise, Idaho, and the McKale Center in Tucson, Arizona, with Boise State University and the University of Arizona, respectively, hosting. The dates are March 17 and 19. The Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is the recommended West regional site, with the University of New Mexico hosting. The dates are March 24 and 26.
St. Louis' Trans World Dome is the approved site for the 2005 Men's Final Four.
The Division I Men's Basketball Committee has recommended that Dallas and Oklahoma City switch years in which each city will host the first and second rounds of future NCAA basketball championships.
Dallas will host first and second rounds of the Midwest region in the new American Airlines Arena in 2002, and Oklahoma City will host first and second rounds of the Midwest region in 2003. The switch is subject to final approval by the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet at its meeting in early February.
Oklahoma City was to host a session in 2002 in its new arena, which is scheduled for completion early that year; Dallas was scheduled to host in 2003.
Competition will take place in Dallas Friday and Sunday, March 15 and 17, 2002. The games in Oklahoma City will be played Thursday and Saturday, March 20 and 22, 2003.
