Field: Regional competition consisting of six teams and five all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and one individual specialist per event will be conducted in each of six regions to determine the participants in the national championships. The national championships will consist of 12 teams and 12 all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and event specialists.
Dates and sites: Regional competitions will be held at Oregon State (Region 1), Minnesota (Region 2), Arizona (Region 3), Alabama (Region 4), Penn State (Region 5) and Georgia (Region 6) on April 1. The national championships will be conducted April 13-15 at Boise State.

Championship notes: Defending champion Georgia is the top-ranked team in the country. UCLA, another top contender for the title, leads the country with the highest regional qualifying score. Other teams looking for top seeds in the regional competition are Michigan, who placed second at last year's championships, Alabama and Utah. Defending balance beam champion Andreé Pickens of Alabama, holds the top ranking for all-arounders in the country. Other top all-around competitors include Kristi Lichey of Georgia, Larissa Fontaine from Stanford and Utah sophomore Theresa Kulikowski, the all-around winner from the 1999 championships
