Field: The national qualifying meet will consist of the top nine teams as well as the conference champions from the Big Ten and Eastern College Athletic Conferences and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the top 12 all-around competitors not on one of the qualifying teams, and the top 12 individuals per event not already qualified on a team or as an all-around competitor. The qualifying meet will have two sessions of competition. Three teams and the top three all-around competitors not on one of the qualifying teams, plus the top three individuals on each event not already qualified on a team or as an all-around competitor will advance from each qualifying session to the championships.
Dates and site: The national qualifying meet and the national championships will be held at Iowa. The national qualifying meet will take place on Thursday, March 30. The national championships will be held March 31 and April 1.

Championships notes: Defending champion Michigan is ranked No. 1 with four weeks left to improve qualifying scores. Junior Justin Toman is seeking to return to the national championships to defend his crown as parallel bars champion. Ohio State also is posting high scores this season and as 1999 runner-up, the Buckeyes have their eye on this year's championship trophy. Penn State also is in contention for its 10th team title.
