Championships notes: Five of six of last year's champions return. Two-time defending champion Colorado and Denver, last year's runner-up, return two champions. Denver gained another when David Viele, the two-time men's giant slalom champion while a Dartmouth undergraduate, enrolled in graduate school there. Utah and Vermont also challenge for team honors. Colorado returnees include Aimee-Noel Hartley, last year's women's giant slalom champion, and Linda Wikstrom, defending women's slalom champion. Denver also features 1999 men's giant slalom winner Jayme Smithers and Britta Wienand, the defending women's classical cross country champion. Vermont's women's Nordic team looks strong -- last year's freestyle cross country winner, Ekaterina Ivanova returns but teammate Tessa Benoir has outdueled her to win the freestyle event in both of the early Eastern Carnivals. Vermont's Brandon Dyksterhouse, 1997 champion in the men's giant slalom, also returns.
