The South Carolina House of Representatives has given final approval to a bill that would remove the Confederate flag from the statehouse dome but would place a similar one at a monument to Confederate soldiers on the statehouse grounds.

The state's Senate passed a similar bill in April.

The action came after heavy lobbying by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and other organizations, and just weeks after the NCAA Executive Committee had voted to withhold NCAA events from South Carolina if the state failed to resolve the issue by the Committee's next meeting in August.

In a statement released by the NCAA, the Association noted that "the focus of the NCAA Executive Committee was the flag's presence above the dome of the statehouse. We are pleased that the governor and state legislature have been able to reach agreement on the matter."

The House passed the bill May 11 in a 62-48 vote.

The Southern Conference previously had said it would not hold its conference championships in the state until the flag was removed from the dome. After the state legislature's actions, Southern Conference Commissioner Alfred B. White said, "The feeling among our chief executives is that the state's action seems reasonable."

The NAACP, however, has indicated that its boycott of the state will continue because the flag still will be too prominent at the new location.

The NCAA has not discussed any action related to the placement of the flag elsewhere on the South Carolina statehouse grounds.
