The NCAA Rifle Committee plans to survey collegiate rifle coaches and their student-athletes for feedback on a rules proposal that would change the way team competitions are scored.
The survey was the major topic of discussion at the committee's annual meeting April 28-30 in Monterey, California.
The formats being examined either would allow coaches to have five shooters compete and the top four scores count in a discipline for the team score, or have four shooters compete and the top three scores count.
The latter format would align NCAA Rifle with international shooting rules. The current NCAA rule mandates that four shooters compete and all four scores count in the team total.
The survey is scheduled to be sent October 1. Completed surveys are due at the NCAA national office no later than November 15. If the committee finds the majority of responses in favor of one of the proposed format changes, a recommendation would then be made to the Division I Championships/ Competition Cabinet for the rule change to be approved since the new rule would affect both championships competition and regular-season competition.
The survey also will solicit feedback regarding the adoption of the new USA Shooting smallbore target for collegiate rifle competitions.
The new target is slightly more expensive than the ones currently being used.
The committee also recommended that two additional official scorers, for a total of 10 official scorers, be hired for the championships. The two additional scorers would be designated as challenge scorers.
The committee believes this will expedite the tournament scoring calculation process.
