Quarterbacks Chad Pennington of Marshall and Corte McGuffey of Northern Colorado, who combined to throw for more than 7,000 yards and 73 touchdowns in 1999, were named to the GTE Academic All-America Football Team announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Pennington was named the Team Member of the Year in the university division, while McGuffey earned the same honor in the college division for the second straight year.

Pennington completed 68 percent of his passes for 37 touchdowns and led the Thundering Herd to a 13-0 record and a Motor City Bowl victory over Brigham Young. The broadcast journalism major also was one of the NCAA's class of 2000 Today's Top VIII winners.

McGuffey, one of three finalists for the Harlon Hill Award as the Division II player of the year, completed 63 percent of his passes this season and led his team to a record of 11-2 and an NCAA bid, where they lost to eventual champion Northwest Missouri State in the Division II quarterfinals.

The GTE Academic All-America Teams in football were selected by a vote of the 1,800-member CoSIDA. Team members are varsity starters or key reserves who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.200 (4.000 scale).
