The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has named 125 NCAA soccer teams as recipients of the NSCAA's fifth annual Team Academic Award.
The award recognizes teams with top academic performances during the calendar year. To be eligible for the award, teams must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.000 or higher (4.000 scale). Only those athletes who appear on the official NCAA squad list for the fall of 1999 are eligible in calculating the grade-point average.
The women's teams from Case Reserve and New Mexico earned the Team Academic Award for the fifth consecutive season, while the men's squads at Adelphi and Bucknell earned the award for the fourth straight time.
The NSCAA also named its third annual Scholar Athletes of the Year. Senior forward Sarah Yohe of Florida received the women's award, while Southern Connecticut State senior midfielder Assaf Dagai was honored with the men's award.
The award is presented annually to the top male and female collegiate soccer player based on academic and athletics performance. The duo heads the 1999 NSCAA Men's and Women's Scholar Athlete All-America teams.
Yohe earned all-tournament honors in leading the Gators to the 1998 Division I title. She also was selected to the U.S. National B-team and ended her collegiate career with 57 goals and 31 assists.
Dagai was a two-year captain and four-year starter for the Owls, and was the first Southern Connecticut State player to score more than 40 goals and 40 assists during his career. The Owls posted an overall record of 81-4-3 with two national titles and four appearances in the Division II semifinals during his tenure.
