Sportsperson of the Year nominations forms will be mailed to the membership during the second week in May.
The award, administered by the NCAA Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee, honors student-athletes who have, through their actions in the competitive arena of intercollegiate athletics, demonstrated one or more of the ideals of sport, including fairness, civility, honesty, unselfishness, respect and responsibility.
The award was created last year, and the first honorees were Allison Beightol from Randolph-Macon College and Jarrett Erwin of Rice University.
Nomination forms will be sent to the athletics director at each NCAA member institution. The Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee has recommended that each school establish a nomination committee composed of a student-athlete, the director of athletics, the senior woman administrator and the sports information director to select the institution's nominees.
Each school may nominate one male and one female who, through a specific act or acts, has served as a noteworthy example of good sportsmanship or ethical conduct.
This year, a male and female NCAA Sportsperson of the Year will be chosen for Divisions I, II and III. The winners will be announced this fall and will be recognized during an awards ceremony at the NCAA Convention in January 2001.
The nomination criteria include:
* Must be a member of an intercollegiate athletics team during the winter/spring of 1998-99 or the 1999-00 academic year.
* Must be in good academic standing.
* Must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports/competition setting.
* Must have demonstrated consistently good sportsmanship and ethical conduct in his or her daily participation in intercollegiate athletics.
* The noteworthy act of sportsmanship must have occurred during the winter/spring semester of the 1998-99 academic year or the 1999-00 academic year,
Supplemental materials such as newspaper articles, photographs or videos will not be considered in the national selection process.
