The NCAA Men's and Women's Skiing Committee voted to make changes to the officiating, equipment and personnel requirements for the slalom and giant slalom for future hosts of the championships at its annual meeting June 13-16 in Indianapolis.

One change is to require the host institution to provide, for slalom races, 24 power zoom video cameras, overlapping at least two to three gates each. In a related change, all available evidence, including film other than that from the required cameras, will be able to be used to protest a disqualification.

Since the use of inexperienced gatekeepers for slalom events is common in the championships, the committee will require the host to secure three to four chief gatekeepers who are Level I certified to oversee 15 to 20 gates each in the slalom. One such chief gatekeeper will be required for the giant slalom. The committee also made this change an option for regular-season events.

In a rules change that mirrored what already was common practice, the committee added sections governing mixed (coed) relays to the rules book. Mixed (coed) relays have been run in regular-season carnivals in the past but are not part of the championships. Although mutual agreement as to how the events should be scored was common, no description of the proper way to do so was listed in the rules book.

The committee also addressed concerns about the coaches' representative having disqualification duties as a jury member since that duty could pose a conflict of interest. For 2000-01, the coaches' representative no longer will have the power to disqualify but will retain all other duties.

Various other housekeeping changes were made to make the rules more similar to the FIS (international) rules.

In other actions regarding the championships, the committee:

Determined that the Central region did not meet the criteria to afford it guaranteed Alpine slots for the 2001 championships.

Established that on the Tuesday that precedes the opening day of the 2001 championships, the host institution will stage a dual slalom race to encourage interaction among opposing team members. The annual student-athlete social will be held at the Alpine venue after the dual slalom at the same time as the coaches' meeting.

Heard a report from the chair that the NCAA Subcommittee on Agents and Amateurism and the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet approved the two-year exception for the sport of skiing as proposed by the committee and the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association.

Noted that for the 2001 championships, cross country events will be held on Wednesday and Friday. Alpine events will be held on Thursday and Saturday. Last year's order was reversed.

Voted that when results for earned slots among regions are equal, the tie will be broken by examining the top 10 finishers in each event for the three previous national championships. If the tie still is not resolved, results will be reviewed a year at a time until the tie is broken.
