While the first visitors to the NCAA Hall of Champions are expected to be Earthlings, word of the Hall's grand opening has already made it to outer space. Steve Smith, a Stanford University graduate and captain of the 1980 NCAA championship water polo team, took the Hall's logo, a ribbon and a CD with the Hall's architectural plans into space on a December mission on the space shuttle Discovery. Smith is an astronaut who specializes in space walks. On his most recent mission, Smith led a team of astronauts that conducted a series of space walks to repair and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope. Smith also will participate in the Hall of Champions grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremonies in Indianapolis March 30.
