Fall Championships previews -- Women's Volleyball

DIVISION I

Dates and sites: First and second rounds (16 sites) -- Thursday-Sunday, November 30-December 1, December 1-2 or 2-3, on the campuses of competing institutions; regionals (four sites) -- Thursday-Sunday, December 7-8, 8-9 or 9-10, on the campuses of competing institutions; finals -- Thursday and Saturday, December 14 and 16, Richmond Coliseum, Richmond, Virginia (Virginia Commonwealth University, host).

Field: 64 teams will compete. The Division I Women's Volleyball Committee will select at least one team from each of the eight districts to participate in the championship; 31 conferences have been granted automatic qualification; the remaining teams will be selected at large.

Selection date: November 25.

1999 champion: Penn State.

Contending teams: Nebraska, Colorado State, Hawaii, Southern California, Arizona.

Players to watch: Amber Holmquist and Laura Pilakowski (Nebraska), Angela Knopf and Courtney Cox (Colorado State), Jennifer Pahl (Southern California), Jessica Sudduth and Lily Kahumoku (Hawaii), Dana Burkholder (Arizona).

DIVISION II

Dates and sites: Regionals (eight sites) -- Thursday-Sunday, November 23-24, 24-25 or 25-26 on the campuses of competing institutions; finals -- Thursday-Saturday, November 30-December 2, on the campus of one of the participating institutions.

Field: 48 teams will compete; six teams from each of the eight districts will be selected to participate.

Selection date: November 12.

1999: Brigham Young-Hawaii.

Contending teams: Hawaii Pacific, Augustana (South Dakota); West Texas A&M, Nebraska-Omaha.

Players to watch: Debbie Sant'Anna (Hawaii Pacific), Kari Peterson [Augustana (South Dakota)], Tracy Ankeny (Nebraska-Omaha), Shannon Stroud (West Texas A&M).

DIVISION III

Dates and sites: Regionals (eight sites) -- Thursday-Saturday, November 9-11, on the campuses of competing institutions; quarterfinals (four sites) -- Saturday, November 18, on the campuses of competing institutions; finals -- Friday-Saturday, December 1-2, on the campus of one of the competing institutions.

Field: 48 teams participate; teams are selected based on conference and regional competition.

Selection date: November 5.

1999 champion: Central (Iowa).

Contending teams: Central (Iowa), Juniata, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Washington (Missouri).

Players to watch: Candace Wilson [Central (Iowa)], Brandy Workinger (Juniata), Melinda Erickson (Wisconsin-Whitewater), Katie Gielow [Washington (Missouri)].

Fact -- On September 29, Minnesota snapped Penn State's 87-match winning streak at home. It was the longest home-court winning streak for NCAA Division I and will go down as the third longest in all NCAA divisions.The Illinois team that last beat Penn State at home was coached by current Minnesota mentor Mike Hebert.
