DIVISION I
Dates and sites:
First round -- November 8 at campus sites; second round -- November 11-12 at campus sites; third round -- November 17-19 at campus sites; quarterfinals -- November 24-26 at campus sites; finals -- December 1 and 3 at Spartan Stadium, San Jose, California.Field: Forty-eight teams, including two teams, which may include automatic-qualifying conference representatives, selected from each of six regions. Twenty-one conferences receive automatic qualification; six conferences involved in a preliminary round (formerly called a play-in). The remaining teams are selected at large.
1999 champion: North Carolina.
Contending teams: North Carolina, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Washington.
Players to watch: Karina LeBlanc (Nebraska), Elizabeth Wagner (Notre Dame), Meredith Florance (North Carolina).
DIVISION II
Dates and sites: First round -- November 11-12 at campus sites; quarterfinals -- November 18-19 at campus sites; finals -- November 30-December 2 on the campus of a participating institution.
Field: Sixteen teams, with two teams chosen from each of the eight geographical regions.
1999 champion: Franklin Pierce.
Contending teams: Barry, North Florida, Southern connecticut State, Franklin Pierce.
Players to watch: Caulli Chiscon (North Florida), Michele Filipczak (Minnesota-Duluth), Jenny Nilsson (Barry), Joanna DaSilva (Wheeling Jesuit).
DIVISION III
Dates and sites:
First round -- November 1 at campus sites; regionals -- November 4-5 at campus sites; quarterfinals -- November 11-12 at campus sites; finals -- November 18-19 on the campus of a participating institution.Field: Forty-five teams selected at large.
1999 champion: UC San Diego.
Contending teams: Wheaton (Illinois), College of New Jersey, Trinity (Texas), Willamette.
Players to watch: Victoria Nusse (College of New Jersey), Carolyn Steud [Union (New York)], Danielle Warden (Messiah), Rebecca Mouw [Wheaton (Illinois)].
Fact -- During its run of five championships in the last six years, Franklin Pierce compiled an overall record of 119-3-0. The Ravens' only NCAA tournament loss occurred at eventual-champion Lynn in the 1998 national semifinals.
