Denver emerges after lengthy hiatus to win skiing title

The NCAA News

Seems like old times.

Denver, which had not won a National Collegiate Men's and Women's Skiing Championships since 1970, scored the most team points in both the men's and women's events, claiming its 15th overall team title March 8-11.

Denver's point total was 720. Two-time defending champion Colorado finished with 621. Vermont was third with 592.

The Alpine events were held at Park City Mountain, Utah. The cross country events were held at Soldier Hollow, Utah. Both were hosted by the University of Utah.

Denver's win overcame Colorado's dominant regular season. The Buffs had won the last four meets in the Western region by comfortable margins.

The Pioneers, who despite dropping their program in 1983 before reinstating it in 1993, are tied with Colorado for the most team titles, were led by Pietro Broggini, who led a top-three Denver sweep in both men's cross country events, and a win in the women's slalom race. In the 20-kilometer freestyle cross country race, Broggini was followed by teammates Wolf Wallendorf (second) and Jorn Frohs (third). Frohs and Wallendorf exchanged place finishes in the 10-kilometer freestyle event. In the women's slalom, Denver's Cecile Hagen Larsen was victorious, beating out 1998 champion Brooke Laundon of Middlebury, who finished third, and second-place finisher Gusty Swift of Dartmouth. Hagen Larsen also was third in the women's giant slalom.

Denver increased its total of individual champions to 58, still in second place behind Colorado, which also won three events to increase its total to 69. Had the Buffs won the team championship, they would have been the first team to have won three straight team championships since Utah in 1986-88.

The Buffs were led by women's giant slalom winner Aimee-Noel Hartley, who became the first woman to repeat in the event since Utah's Christl Hager won in 1994 and 1995. Defending champion teammate Linda Wikstrom was second. Utah's Anke Friedrich repeated in 1989 and 1990.

The Buffs' Andy Leroy claimed the men's slalom title, snapping a two-year Denver reign in the race. Each of the past two winners, Christian Hutter (1998) and Jayme Smithers, were in the field. Hutter finished third; Smithers 11th. Colorado's other title came from Katerina Hanusova in the five-kilometer freestyle cross country race.

Vermont's Matthew Knittle outdid second-place teammate Brandon Dyksterhouse to win the men's giant slalom. Dyksterhouse won the event in 1997. David Viele, who won the event in each of the last two years, did not finish his second run and therefore did not place.
