Bagwell to retire as AD after 35 years

Howard Bagwell, athletics director at Char les ton Southern for 35 years, announced plans to retire May 31. Bagwell has held the position since the school opened as Baptist College.

In addition to fulfilling duties as athletics director, Bagwell coached men’s basketball in 1965 and 1966. He also led the track team for 20 years before retiring from coaching in 1984.

During his tenure, Bagwell helped establish the Big South Conference in 1983, of which then Baptist College was a charter member. He also guided the athletics program through the transition from an NAIA school with five sports teams to an NCAA Division I program in 1973.

Bagwell, a 1996 inductee into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Furman.

The school appointed Rick Brewer, dean of students and chairman of the school’s Athletics Task Force, as interim director of athletics.



GENERAL

Director of Athletics

Tom Kirinovic was promoted to athletics director at Ferris State after fulfilling interim duties since August. Kirinovic has been an associate athletics director since 1994.

Senior Woman Administrator

Jane Goss, senior woman administrator and associate athletics director at Shippens burg, announced retirement plans, effective December 31. The school named Roberta Page as Goss’ successor, effective January 1.

Associate Director of Athletics

Texas A&M named Steve McDonnell as associate athletics director for academic affairs.

Assistant Directors of Athletics

Matt Eviston was appointed as assistant athletics director for sports information and media relations at Elon ... Abilene Christian appointed Doug Conder as assistant director of athletics.

Coaches

Baseball assistant Steve Miller was chosen as an assistant coach at Nicholls State.

Men’s basketball Buffalo head coach Tim Cohane resigned, and the school named Reggie Witherspoon as interim coach.

Men’s basketball assistants Brian Bodnar and Eric Royse were added as assistants at Muhlenberg. Bodnar has most recently coached at the high-school level, and Royse has spent the past two years as an assistant at Marywood ... Buffalo reassigned associate head coach Frank Valenti and assistant coach Jasper Walker to posts within the university but outside the athletics department ... Ron Felling resigned as an assistant at Indiana.

Women’s basketball assistants Alvernia hired John Burd as an assistant coach. Burd has been coaching at the high-school level ... Montana State promoted Tara Harrington to top assistant and awarded second assistant duties to Blythe Hommes and student assistant responsibilities to Jamie Spring.

Field hockey St. Mary’s (Maryland) appointed Robert Bray as head field hockey and women’s lacrosse coach. For the past seven years, Bray has been an assistant with the school’s men’s lacrosse program.

Football Findlay head coach Doug Coate resigned ... Shannon Currier was elevated to head coach at Concordia (Min nesota) to replace Dan O’Brien, who will retain responsibilities as athletics director. Currier has been assistant head coach and offensive coordinator ... Utah State released head coach Dave Arslanian after two years ... Philip “Todd” Whitten was selected as head coach at Tarleton State. Whitten formerly served as head coach of the program during the 1995-96 season and was offensive coordinator at Sam Houston State last season ... Chris Hatcher was appointed as head coach at Valdosta State to succeed Mike Kelly, who was released. Hatcher has been an assistant coach at Kentucky ... Northern Illinois awarded head coach Joe Novak a five-year contract extension through June 30, 2005 ... Michigan State elevated Bobby Williams to head coach. Williams had served in an interim capacity. Williams, who was previously associate head coach, succeeds Nick Saban ... Bob Sutton was released as head coach at Army after nine years and a 44-55-1 record ... Joe Glenn was hired as head coach at Mon tana. Glenn, who has been head coach at Northern Colorado, replaces Mick Den nehy ... Northern Colorado appointed Kay Dalton as head coach ... Utah State chose Mick Dennehy as head coach to succeed Dave Arslanian. Dennehy has been head coach at Montana for four seasons ... Tulsa appointed Keith Burns as head coach. Burns was defensive coordinator at Ark ansas for two seasons and succeeds Dave Rader, who was released ... Sam Mc Corkle was selected as head coach at Tennessee-Martin ... Akron awarded head coach Lee Owens a four-year contract extension through the 2005 season ... Chris Tormey accepted head coaching duties at Nevada. Tormey, who succeeds Jeff Tisdel, has been head coach at Idaho for the past five seasons.

Football assistants Ohio State re leased Mike Jacobs, offensive coordinator, and Shawn Simms, defensive ends coach. The school also elevated Fred Pagac to assistant head coach, Jon Tenuta to defensive coordinator, and Chuck Stobart to offensive coordinator. Pagac was defensive coordinator and will continue to work with the defense. Tenuta was secondary coach and Stobart was wide receivers coach ... Steve Greatwood was released as offensive line coach at Southern California ... Jerry Berndt resigned as offensive coordinator at Missouri ... Torresy Smith was added as an assistant coach at Montana State ... Missouri’s running backs coach, David Mitchell, was released ... Ron Richards was selected as offensive coordinator and Mike Breske was chosen as defensive coordinator at Montana ... North Carolina released Steve Marshall, offensive coordinator, Jim Hofher, quarterbacks and passing game coach, and Ken Mack, running backs coach ... John Thomp son was added as recruiting coordinator and Brad Mc Abee was added as offensive line coach at Jacksonville State ... Montana State selected Pete Kwiatkowski as linebackers coach and defensive coordinator, Aaron Flowers as quarterbacks coach and Jason Anderson as receivers coach ... Bob Cole, Kraig Paulson and Tom McMahon were ap pointed as assistant coaches at Utah State.

Men’s and women’s gymnastics Yale named Bryon Knox as women’s assistant coach.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistant Keene State added Phedra Hamilton as an assistant coach.

Softball Long Island-C.W. Post appointed Larissa Smith as an assistant coach for the 2000 season.

Women’s soccer Paul Stumpf was chosen as head coach at UC Santa Barbara ... Capital appointed Jodie Stranges as head coach. Stranges, who has been an assistant with the program this season, replaces Brian Arnold ... Ray Kordus, head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne, resigned ... Bowling Green head coach Tom Piccirillo resigned after three years. The school named Julie Reule, an assistant coach for the past three years, as interim head coach ... Gerry Lucey was chosen as head coach at Long Island-C.W. Post to succeed Bob Blitz. Lucey has been an assistant for the past three seasons ... Newberry chose Alana Hill as head coach.

Men’s and women’s tennis Bill Adams replaced Linda Andrews as head women’s coach at Muhlenberg. Adams most recently coached the school’s men’s team. Andrews will become an assistant track and field coach and retain cross country coaching duties.

Men’s and women’s volleyball Fort Hays State selected Jesse Mahoney as head women’s coach. Mahoney has been interim coach of the program this past season ... Paula Reed, an assistant coach at Muhl enberg, was chosen as interim head coach at the school to succeed Stewart Arevalo ... Rutgers-Newark added Sean Byron as head men’s and women’s coach. Since 1998, Byron has been fulfilling similar duties at East Stroudsburg ... Phil Shoemaker re signed as head coach at Wichita State ... Liz Perry man resigned as head coach at Con cordia (Minnesota), effective January 7.

Staff

Athletic trainer Loras named Keith Morrow as athletic trainer to replace Diane McCoy. Since July, Morrow has been district head athletic trainer for the South western Independent School District in San Antonio.

Business services Michigan selected Jason Winters as executive director of athletics business operations.

Sports information San Francisco State hired Ted Hallisey as sports information director. Hallisey most recently worked as an on-air personality and ac count executive for KKAT and KWLW radio stations in Salt Lake City ... Jeffrey T. Wyshner was added as sports information director at Manhattan. Wyshner, who re places Jeff Bernstein, has been head wo men’s tennis coach at the school for six years and will retain head coaching duties ... Keith Smith replaced Roger McAfee as sports information director at Christian Brothers. Smith has been sports information director and head cheerleading coach at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee.

Sports information assistant Steve Easton was appointed as assistant sports information director at Toledo.

Conferences

The Capital Athletic Conference elected Michael Vienna as president and Ed ward Hegmann as vice-president. Vienna, athletics director at Salisbury State, was vice-president of the conference and replaces Paul Moyer of St. Mary’s (Maryland). Heg mann serves as athletics director at Mary Wash ington.

Association

Oklahoma athletics director Joe Castig lione was appointed as third vice-president of the National Association of Colleg iate Directors of Athletics. Castiglione replaces Mark Dienhart, formerly director of men’s athletics at Minnesota.

Corrections

The site of the 2000 Hula Bowl was reported incorrectly in a Division I Football Certification Subcommittee story published in the November 22 issue of The NCAA News. The January 22 all-star classic will be played in Maui.

The Bentley College field hockey player pictured on the front page of the November 22 issue of The NCAA News was misidentified. The player in the blue uniform was Bentley’s Allyson Bunce. Also, in the game story, a quotation from Blooms burg Uni versity of Pennsylvania coach Jan Hutch inson was incorrectly attributed to Bentley coach Kelly West.

Due to an error in the printing process, page 220 of the 1999-00 NCAA Directory was repeated and page 221 was omitted. The correct page 221 is being sent to all recipients of the Directory.

On page 189, Wilmington College should have been listed as being in New Castle, Delaware 19720.

On page 211, Philadelphia University should be listed as a member of the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference rather than the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

On page 213, Concordia University (Il linois) should be listed as a member of the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference rather that the Concordia University, St. Paul.

The Division III men’s soccer championship story in the December 6 issue of The NCAA News incorrectly identified the number of undefeated and untied men’s teams in Division III. St. Lawrence finished the season at 22-0 and captured the Div ision III Men’s Soccer Championship. Nebraska Wesleyan completed a 19-0 season but did not receive a bid to the playoffs.

Following are the 10 finalists for the 1999 Gagliardi Trophy awarded to the outstanding Division III football player: R.J. Bowers, Grove City; Michael Burton, Trinity (Texas); Matt LeFever, Western Con necticut State; Martin Hood, Frostburg State; Kevin Otte, Wilmington; Matt Per cevel, Wesleyan (Con necticut); Scott Pingel, Westminster (Mis souri); Daniel Ragsdale, Redlands; Paul Smith, Gettysburg; and Ben Streby, Ot terbein.

Ron Dayne, Wisconsin football player, was named as the Walter Camp Player of the Year Trophy winner and Associated Press College Player of the Year. Dayne is the NCAA Division I all-time career rushing leader with 6,397 yards. He also is one of four players in college football history with four seasons of at least 1,000 rushing yards.

Jenna Daniels of Arizona and Erik Compton of Miami (Florida) were named as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for November.

Sarah Butler was selected as the 1999 American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II national player of the year. Butler, a senior outside hitter at West Texas A&M, is a three-time AVCA Division II first-team all-America selection.

Corey Moore, defensive end at Virginia Tech, was named the winner of the 1999 Mike Fox-Bronco Nagurski Trophy. The award, presented annually since 1993 by the Charlotte Touchdown Club and the Football Writers Association of America, is given to the nation’s top defender. Moore’s 17 sacks this season established a Big East record. Other finalists were LaVar Arring ton, Penn State; Courtney Brown, Penn State; Tyrone Carter, Minnesota; and Corey Simon, Florida State.

Sebastian Janikowski, kicker at Florida State, was named winner of the Lou Groza Award for the second straight year. Janik owski led the nation with 23 field goals in 30 attempts and became the first repeat winner of the award presented to the nation’s top college football kicker. Other finalists were Vitaly Pisetsky, Wisconsin, and Jamie Rheem, Kansas State.

The following players and coaches were announced as inductees into the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame: Herschel Walker, Georgia; Frank Loria, Virginia Tech (posthumous); Ross Browner, Notre Dame; Chuck Dicus, Ark ansas; John Hannah, Alabama; Chris Gilbert, Texas; Billy Kilmer, UCLA; Greg Pruitt, Oklahoma; Steve Kiner, Tennessee; Chuck Long, Iowa; Joe Palumbo, Virginia; Ed White, California; Jerry Claiborne, head coach at Virginia Tech, Maryland and Kentucky; and Jim Young, head coach at Arizona, Purdue and Army.

The Vincent dePaul Draddy award for the nation’s top scholar-athlete was given to Marshall’s Chad Pennington.

Keith Jackson, longtime broadcaster, was named as the National Football Found ation and College Hall of Fame Gold Medal award recipient.

Georgia Southern’s Adrian Peterson was honored as the Walter Payton Award winner. The award is presented to the nation’s most outstanding NCAA Division I-AA player. Peterson, a sophomore fullback, has rushed for 100 or more yards in all 28 games he has played.

Al Lucus, senior nose tackle at Troy State, was named as the Buck Buchanan Award winner as the NCAA Division I-AA top defensive player, and Mickey Matthews, first-year head coach at James Madison, was selected as NCAA Division I-AA coach of the year.

Corey Moore, defensive end at Virginia Tech, was named recipient of the Lom bardi Award as the nation’s top lineman.

Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Ralph Friedgen won the Broyles Award, presented to the top assistant college football coach in the nation.

Mandy Clemens and Sasha Victorine were named as the Missouri Athletic Club Sports Foundation Collegiate Soccer Play ers of the Year. The honors also serve as the official Division I player of the year selections for the National Soccer Coach es Association of America and Adidas. Clem ens, a senior forward at Santa Clara, is the school’s all-time leading scorer. Victorine, a senior forward and midfielder at UCLA, leads the squad in scoring this season.


DEATHS

Paul Stuart, sports information director at Nevada, died of an apparent heart attack. He was 48. Stuart had been sports information director at Nevada since 1981, and before that he had been information services director at New Mexico Highlands.

Former Austin coach and athletics director Robert T. Mason died November 6. Mason joined the Austin athletics department in 1961 as assistant men’s basketball coach, assistant football coach and head track coach. He went on to become head men’s basketball coach in 1962, a position he would retain until 1995. He continued as track coach until 1964 and remained as a football assistant until 1978. Mason was appointed as athletics director in 1969 and continued in that capacity until retiring in 1997.
