Three-game sweep nets Brigham Young-Hawaii's first crown

Brigham Young-Hawaii claimed its first NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship December 4 with a 15-3, 15-12, 15-13 win over Tampa.

Four-time all-American Arlete Silva led the Seasiders to victory with 23 kills and a .556 hitting percentage.

The Seasiders jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first game. Tampa responded with three points before BYU-Hawaii's Karla Ribeiro served seven consecutive points to finish the game.

Tampa went on the attack in the second game to lead, 6-3. The Seasiders battled back to a 7-6 lead and then continued scoring for the win.

The third game saw Tampa and BYU-Hawaii fight point-for-point to tie it up at 13. Setter Juliana Lima gave the Seasiders the win and the title with strong serving and a kill. Lima recorded 46 assists on the night and also led the team in digs with 15. Silva and Vanessa Valansi combined for 42 kills to pace the Seasiders' offense.

Tampa's Jolene Patton posted a team-high 16 kills, and setter Danielle Faggion dished out 41 assists in the loss.

In semifinal play, the Seasiders swept Northern Kentucky, 15-0, 15-5, 15-5, to advance to the final. Tampa defeated West Texas A&M, 15-11, 6-15, 16-18, 15-5, 18-16.

All-tournament team members were Silva, Valansi and Lima of BYU-Hawaii; Faggion, Tiffany Boatwright and Becky Hart of Tampa; West Texas A&M's Sarah Butler and Shannon Stroud; Sarah Schall of Lockhaven; Rachel Schieg of North Dakota State; North Alabama's Rhonda Price; and Northern Kentucky's Jenny Jeremiah.
