Cincinnati names Royalty as head coach
Cincinnati has chosen Tim Royalty as head women's rowing coach. The program is set to begin varsity competition in the 2000-01 academic year.
Royalty has led Cincinnati's men's and women's club teams since 1990. He led the women's varsity four squad to a collegiate championship in 1994 at the Champion International Collegiate Regatta. The women's program also captured Midwest regional championship honors in 1996.
Royalty competed on the school's club team as an undergraduate. He went on to compete on a national level at the U.S. Olympic Festival and the Elite and Club nationals.
Royalty is a 1990 graduate of Cincinnati.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Cal State Dominguez Hills appointed James E. Lyons Sr. as president. Lyons has been president at Jackson State since 1992.
DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Deborah Yow, athletics director at Maryland, was awarded a two-year contract extension through August 2004. Yow has held the position since 1994 and is a member of the NCAA Division I Management Council and Division I Budget Subcommittee ... Benny Hollis announced plans to retire as athletics director at Tennessee-Martin, effective June 30, 2000. Hollis has held the post since 1994 ... District of Columbia selected Michael McLeese as director of athletics and head men's basketball coach ... Lipscomb selected Steve Potts as athletics director, effective January 1. Since 1990, Potts has served as associate dean for administration at the Pepperdine University School of Law.
SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS
Saundra Woods was selected as senior woman administrator at District of Columbia ... Lipscomb named Lin Garner as senior woman administrator/assistant athletics director.
ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Andy Lane was elevated to associate athletics director at Lipscomb. Lane has been an assistant athletics director since 1991 ... Cornell hired Bob Chaddock as associate director of athletics. Chaddock has been manager of facilities and operations for the athletics department at Michigan since 1998.
ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS
Jim Dugoni was named assistant director of athletics for development/executive director of the Pacific Tigers Athletic Association at Pacific (California). Dugoni, who succeeds Duane Isetti, most recently served as assistant athletics director for external affairs at the school ... Amy Dean was added as assistant athletics director for business and personnel at Ohio. Dean most recently was installation sports director at Fort Bliss in Texas.
COACHES
Baseball -- Arizona State assistant coach John Pawlowski was named head coach at College of Charleston.
Baseball assistant -- Pace selected Paul Magrini as pitching coach.
Men's basketball -- Memphis head coach George "Tic" Price resigned, and the school named Johnny Jones as interim head coach. Price was entering his third season as head coach, and Jones has been associate head coach ... Darin Archer was elevated to head coach at Southwest Baptist, effective immediately, after serving in an interim capacity since October 1.
Men's basketball assistants -- Wentworth Institute hired Tom Devitt as an assistant ... Robert Cherry and Lorenzo Roach were chosen as assistants at District of Columbia ... Long Island added Carlton Screen as an assistant ... Charlie Leonard was chosen as an assistant coach at Memphis.
Women's basketball -- District of Columbia hired Phillip Morgan as head coach ... Elwin Heiny was appointed as interim head coach at Montana State-Billings ... Angelo State head coach Sarah Edelbrock resigned, effective at the end of the 1999-00 season. Edelbrock has been head coach since 1997.
Women's basketball assistants -- Bernard Baruch selected Eric Mercado as an assistant coach ... Walt Mikorski was chosen as an assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson-Madison ... Matt Fisher was hired as an assistant coach at Goucher ... District of Columbia added Stephanie Evans Suber and Willie Stewart as assistants ... Men's and women's cross country -- Yale's Steve Bartold announced plans to retire as head men's cross country and track and field coach, effective at the end of the outdoor season in June. Bartold has led the programs since 1980.
Football -- LSU released Gerry DiNardo as head coach, a position he has held since 1995. Assistant coach Hal Hunter has been appointed as head coach for the season's final game ... Rich Rasnick released as head coach at Eastern Michigan. Rasnick closes his tenure with a 20-34 mark ... Tennessee-Martin head coach Jim Marshall resigned, effective at the end of the season. Marshall has been head coach since December, 1996 ... Texas A&M-Kingsville head coach Ron Harms resigned ... Bill Russo, head coach at Lafayette, announced plans to retire at the end of the season ... Edinboro will not renew the contract of head football coach Tom Hollman ... Joe Hadachek resigned after four seasons as head coach at Buena Vista. The school promoted offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator Steve Osterberger as Hadachek's successor. Osterberger joined the program in 1996.
Men's and women's gymnastics assistant -- Rhode Island College added Paula Randall-Cutrali as women's assistant coach.
Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Frank Genovese was added as a men's assistant coach at New England College. Genovese has been a video assistant for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League.
Men's and women's lacrosse -- Alise Shuart was selected as head women's coach at Ohio Wesleyan ... Plymouth State appointed Nate Ostis as head men's coach.
Men's soccer -- Cleveland State's Brian Doyle resigned as head coach, effective December 31.
Women's soccer -- Kendall Reyes resigned as head coach at Newberry ... American head coach Colleen Corwell will not return next season. Corwell has been head coach for eight seasons and closes her tenure with a 67-73-9 mark ... Bill Parker resigned as head coach at Georgia.
Men's and women's swimming -- Clarion head men's and women's coach Bill Miller announced plans to retire, effective May 19, 2000. Miller has coached the men's squad for 22 years and guided the women's program for 13 years. The school promoted assistant Mark VanDyke to succeed Miller. VanDyke has served as assistant coach for 12 years.
Men's and women's tennis -- Will Marino was named head men's and women's coach at Chapman. Marino spent the last two and a half years as an assistant coach at UC Irvine ... Worcester Polytechnic chose Tom Vukmirovits as part-time head men's coach to replace Brian Young.
Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Goucher hired Marilee Bennett and Donald Davis as assistants ... Simon Hodnett was awarded duties as men's and women's assistant coach at Long Island.
Men's and women's volleyball -- Endicott hired Anthony C. Giarla as head men's coach ... UC Irvine head women's coach Merja Connolly-Freund resigned after four seasons ... Idaho State did not renew the contract of head coach, Bill MacLachlan ... Bruce Grandin, head women's coach at Dowling, announced plans to retire. Since accepting the post in 1991, Grandin has built a 294-90 record ... JoAnn Atwell-Scrivner resigned as head women's coach at Seattle Pacific, effective June 30. Scrivner, who was the program's first coach, will continue to teach in the physical education department.
Wrestling assistant -- Joe Sloan was chosen as a part-time assistant at Cal State Fullerton.
STAFF
Athletic trainers -- District of Columbia appointed Leslie Dawson as athletic trainer ... Chris Yartym was hired as head athletic trainer at Alfred to replace M. Scott Zema. Yartym most recently worked as assistant athletic trainer and co-head athletic trainer at Morgan State.
Communications assistant -- Monmouth added Ross Blacker as assistant director of athletics communications. For the past five months, Blacker has been athletics communications assistant at Boston College.
Compliance -- Mark Linder was selected as compliance/athletics academic coordinator at Misssouri Western State. Linder most recently was athletics compliance/academic coordinator and football defensive coordinator at Wayne State (Nebraska) ... Clarene Martin was selected as compliance officer at District of Columbia.
Facilities -- Bill Givens was appointed as director of Montagne Center operations at Lamar. Givens has been assistant athletics director at Southeastern Louisiana since 1995.
Sports information -- Pace hired Brian Mundy as sports information director. For the past two years, Mundy has been sports/news editor with the Shelter Island Reporter, a weekly newspaper based on Long Island.
Ticket operations -- Cornell awarded Gene Nighman duties as director of the Cornell Sports School and director of the ticket office. Nighman was assistant to the athletics director, head wrestling coach and summer sports school coordinator at Cortland State.
CONFERENCES
The Ohio Conference appointed Jeanne Arbuckle as president and Bob Chase as vice-president.
The Empire Eight announced the selection of Michael Gentile as the conference's first full-time commissioner, effective January 1. Gentile has been associate athletics director at Texas-El Paso for the past year and a half.

The following have been selected for induction into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's Collegiate Hall of Fame: Janet Hopps Adkisson, Seattle; Tory Fretz, Occidental; Nancy Pearce Jeffett, Miami (Florida); and Fern "Peachy" Kellmeyer, Washington (Missouri). Adkisson played No. 1 singles for the Seattle men's squad in the mid-fifties and was ranked in the top 10 among U.S. women from 1956 to 1960. Fretz captured the national singles and doubles crowns in 1961 and served as women's national singles champion from 1963 to 1968. Co-founder of the Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation, Jeffett's organization sponsors a dozen major tournaments and has contributed more than $4 million for player development. Kellmeyer was the first woman to play on a Division I men's team at Miami (Florida). She currently is senior vice-president of operations and player relations at the Women's Tennis Association Tour.

The Davey O'Brien Foundation selected 10 finalists for the 1999 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, which is given to the nation's top quarterback. Finalists are: Major Applewhite, Texas; Drew Brees, Purdue; Kevin Feterik, Brigham Young; Joe Hamilton, Georgia Tech; Tee Martin, Tennessee; Chad Pennington, Marshall; Tim Rattay, Louisiana Tech; Chris Redman, Louisville; Michael Vick, Virginia Tech; Chris Weinke, Florida State.
The American Volleyball Coaches Association presented the inaugural AVCA Excellence in Education award to Iradge Ahrabi-Fard and Darlene Kluka. Ahrabi-Fard has been head women's volleyball coach at Northern Iowa since 1981, and Kluka currently is a faculty member of the Grambling State HPELS department and coordinator of the health and physical education department.
Glenn E. "Bo" Schembechler was named as the Walter Camp Football Foundation 1999 Distinguished American of the Year. Schembechler's 27 years as a head football coach included 21 years at Michigan and a 234-65-8 mark. He also spent two years as athletics director at Michigan after relinquishing head coaching duties.
Abbie Brown, volleyball middle and outside hitter at Central (Iowa), was selected as the 1999 American Volleyball Coaches Association National Player of the Year for NCAA Division III. Brown, who earned the honor for the second consecutive year, is a three-time AVCA first-team all-America pick and holds the school record for the most kills in a match (34), season (631) and career (1,706).
The following NCAA Division II women's volleyball coaches have been honored as Tachikara/AVCA Region Coaches of the Year: Atlantic -- Tom Justice, Lock Haven; Great Lakes -- Mary Biermann, Northern Kentucky; North Central -- Linda Delk, Northern Colorado; Northeast -- Garvey Pierre, Mercy; Pacific -- Wilfred Navalta, Brigham Young-Hawaii; South -- Chris Catanach, Tampa; South Central -- Tracy Rietzke, Rockhurst; Southwest -- Darin Webster, Western State.
DEATHS
Bob Blitz, C.W. Post head women's soccer coach, died October 28 after battling cancer. He was 64. Blitz was an assistant with the school's men's team for six years before becoming the women's program's first coach in 1994.
Jimmy Sidle, a former Auburn all-America quarterback, died of heart failure November 14. He was 57. In 1963, Sidle was the first quarterback to lead the nation in rushing with 1,006 yards. He went on to play professionally with the Dallas Cowboys and the Atlanta Falcons, as well as in the Canadian Football League.
Eldon Fix, former teacher, coach and administrator at Lewis & Clark, died November 15. He was 86. Fix joined the school as head basketball coach and head track and field coach in 1946. In addition to establishing the men's cross country program in 1948, he later served as a health and physical education teacher and athletics director. Fix served as a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee for track and field for 12 years and coached at the international level. He retired from the school in 1981.
Former College of New Jersey athletics director Roy Van Ness died recently. Ness was the school's first full-time athletics director from 1964 until his retirement in 1987. Ness coached football, track and field and basketball and taught in the health and physical education department before assuming the athletics director position.
