Brigham Young uses group concept to win second title
"Just stick together."
That phrase normally is associated with team sports such as football, basketball, soccer and the like. But with the success Brigham Young had in following its coach's advice at the Division I Women's Cross Country Championships November 22 at Indiana, add another sport to the list.
Although Brigham Young did not place any runners in the top 10, the Cougars regained the team title that they won in 1997 but lost by just four points last year to Villanova. The Cougars recorded the lowest winning tally in six years with a score of 72 points.
Arkansas was second with 125 points and Stanford was third with 127.
Erica Palmer of Wisconsin celebrated her 20th birthday by capturing the individual championship.
Brigham Young, which became just the fifth institution to win more than one team championship, had all its scorers finish in the top 30 and within 18 seconds of each other. Elizabeth Jackson led the Cougars with her 11th-place finish, followed by Kara Ormond in the 16th spot and Tara Rohatinsky in the 17th position.
Sharolyn Shields placed 23rd and Laura Heiner 26th for the Cougars.
"We said that we wanted to run for each other, and that's what we did," said Jackson. "We ran together as a team."
That was the message Brigham Young head coach Patrick Shane was emphasizing to his squad.
"We moved out front early and were able to run together as a pack for much of the race," he said. "This is easily the best team I have ever coached, no question. The team unity, spirit and feeling was very positive and it carried them to the championship."
Palmer, a sophomore, covered the 8,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 39.5 seconds for the win. Arkansas' Amy Yoder was second in 16:44.1, and teammate Larissa Kleinmann finished third in 16:48.8.
As the front pack of three moved within site of the finish chute, Palmer made her decisive move. She broke away from the Arkansas pair and won by a 10-meter gap.
"I wasn't running for time, I was running for position," Palmer said. "My coach decided that 800 meters out was the right point for me to make my move and it worked out."
Stanford's performance was highlighted by the top two freshmen finishers -- Lauren Fleshman in fifth place and Erin Sullivan in seventh.
