Arkansas' men's cross country string grows to 10 with win

The Division I Men's Cross Country Championships included something old as well as something new.

Arkansas took care of the "something old" by winning its record 10th title November 22 at Indiana, and South Alabama's David Kimani represented the "something new" by securing his institution's first individual crown.

With three finishers in the top 10, Arkansas scored 58 points for a runaway 127-point victory over Wisconsin. It was the widest winning margin in the 61-year history of the championships, exceeding the Razorbacks' 122-point triumph over Brigham Young in 1993.

"We got out on everyone early and didn't give anyone a chance to catch up," said Arkansas head coach John McDonnell. "That's our philosophy. You can take a lot of teams out early if you go out fast. Our guys knew what they had to do and they did it very well."

Michael Power, who did not finish the 1998 championships race, led the Razorbacks this year with his second-place time of 30:09.6 for 10,000 meters. Teammates Andrew Begley and James Karanu ended up seventh and 10th, respectively, to join him in the top 10.

"I thought about last year's disappointment about halfway through and made sure it wouldn't happen again," Power said.

"Power ran a great race," said McDonnell. "He's our captain. He met with the team before the race and told everyone we would win and win big."

Murray Link finished 22nd and Matt Kerr 24th to round out the Razorbacks' scoring.

"I never dreamed we would win this big. We really expected this to be much closer," said McDonnell, who has been the head coach for 34 Division I championships in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track and field at Arkansas.

"Every national championship is rewarding in its own way," McDonnell said. "Power and Kerr were running their final races for Arkansas. It was special for them. We never get tired of winning."

Kimani, a freshman from Kenya, pulled away from his pursuers after about eight kilometers, while Power outkicked Oregon's Steve Fein over the last 500 meters for the second spot. The winning time of 30:06.6 was an Indiana course record.

"Coming down the final stretch, I wasn't surprised that I was going to win," Kimani said. "I had won most of my races against some of the other challengers. I knew there were a lot of talented guys, but I had Michael Power with me and that gave me confidence.

"I heard my coach shouting, saying this was the national championship, and I had to go."

Wisconsin, which tied Penn State for the most team appearances in the championships with 39, placed two competitors in the top 10 to finish second in the team battle. Matthew Downin repeated his fourth-place effort of 1998 and Jay Schoenfelder finished sixth.
